I'm replacing my heater core in my '89. I've removed the dash panels, top pad, breadloaf (tossing this piece of crap because I don't wish to make bread in my C4 anymore :smash: ), computer, and passenger lower panel. What needs to come out next?

I think that all you can take out. Now try to take the heater core out. Note the position where the screw that attach to the vent door at so you can put it back the same place.

Did you take out the side vent yet? I can only take that vent out after the bread box was out.

I've got the ductwork out and some other junk. Do I need to remove the big diagonal brace? Also, how many screws are at the top of this box? I see two, I hope there aren't more because I won't be able to get to what I can't see. The GM engineers were on top of this one. :banghead:

I didn't take the brace out. I think there are two screws on the bottom and one on top for the heater core. The top one is a piece of work :mad

There were 2 screws on top and 3 on the bottom. I removed the carpet pad and the brace. I've got the new core in and am back on my way towards the start line. I wish that i would have rented a double jointed monkey for this job. When I was putting the cover back on, I had my arm up inside th box to aim the temp rod for the hole. this was while i was lying on my back with my feet in the hatch. I thought for a minute that I was going to have to chew my arm off to get out. :smash: tonight, i should have the car back together. Thanks everyone for the input and direction. Just did it on my '89 2 weeks ago. I removed the diagonal brace. There are 5 screws on the plastic cover for the core - 2 top, three bottom/sides. There are 3 screws retaining the core itself - 1 top middle & 2 bottom. As said, watch the position of the rod on the motor that opens/closes the door (if you have electronic controls). BTW, I also took out the pad in addition to the lower access panel - 4 nuts & much more room if you have full size American arms & hands. I got the upper screws restarted by placing a bit of tape on them & wedging them into my 7mm socket. It helps to have 1/4" drive flex adapters and every extension length they don't make :D Total time for me was about 5 hours for the heater core in-and-out. Plus a couple of hours to fix the broken dash frame and to eliminate the breadbox - not necessary, but seems to add a lot of "room" inside & looks way better One more thing - since you're there inspect all wires & the orange vacuum line. I found two damaged wires & a missing heat shield on the courtesy lamp. My new heat shield is two thicknesses of Bud can :cheers:

It took two weekends for me :rolleyes:. Total time maybe ~ 8 hrs but I took A LOT of break.

What orange vacuum line are you referring to, where is it? I don't remember seeing it.

I am going to be replacing the heater core in my 95 real soon (this week maybe) - anyone have tips on it?

I think that the '94 -'96 cores are accessible from under the hood. Check into this before you rip the dash out. It would probably be much easier. Disconnect the battery so you don't risk setting off an airbag.

VQT88Vette - It runs across the bottom of the heater core box. It attaches to the lower left corner of the heater cor box cover. It terminates on the right side at a vacuum actuator. It's the only vacuum line I found on the passenger side.

I just finished the job! :party:
It even has a flat panel instead of the loaf.
Now, after all that work, it's time to sell and buy a nice '94. Two people want to look at my car already. i still have to fully convince myself that the Black/Black '94 6-speed will be better than my '89. My '89 is in the paper for $8995. I can have the '94 for 11k.

I kinda guessed that was the breadbox, but wasn't sure.

Oh well, looks like I've got my work cut out for me.

Now, if anyone has pictures/instructions for taking apart and cleaning out the A/C evaporator so I can get some air-flow again....
