cooling fans on at start-up
At engine start-up my cooling fan comes almost immediately and the service engine soon light comes on until the engine warms up to normal running temperature. The ALDL indicates low coolant temperature (no duh, the coolant temperature is always low at cold starts). I figure this is not good to have the fans running while the engine is trying to warm up. Any ideas?

On my 86 the fan starts up right away too. I talked to somebody I met on here about it though and he said that sometimes you have the dual fans and one of them is set to come on. Supposedly on the left side of the engine there is a connector sticking out that if you have two, it will have a wire coming from it running to the radiator area. I had it, and since all works fine I assumed it was just that. Just an idea, sorry I couldn't help more...

Understand you are getting a Code 15, Engine Coolant Temperature-Low Temp Indicated. This could be sensing a temp below -30C.
Assuming you are getting a Code 15, check the connections at the engine coolant temp sensor and all associated wiring. If all is OK, suspect you have a bad temp sensor or the ECM may be heading south.
The GM ECT sensors are around $10.
Let us know.

If the wiring is ok, then the CTS resistance is probably to high (cold engine) and setting code 15. Replace the CTS. If that doesn't clear up the problem the the ECM may be having problems.

The factory programmed one of my 90's fans to come on at startup if the A/C (or defroster) is on. If A/C is off, then the fan doesn't come on until the coolant reaches the pre-set temp.
Maybe your's is that way too?

My fans come on at start-up whether the a/c is on or not. -- Nice TPIS set-up. What are your thoughts on your mini-ram? Would you recommend one? I'd like to talk to someone running one. I'm new to the forum and have seen accel recommended mostly. THANKS!!

The MR just loves to wind waaay up there! It's a blast - I love it. Neat, clean, and one piece - makes teardowns a snap.
