Drag Strip: Question for the automatic guys.
When you launch do you launch in "D" and let the tranny shift itself? When I meet a challenger at a red light I put it in "2" and launch and when it winds out I throw it in "D". I was told to just leave it in "D". But I find it's quicker if I start off in "2" because it downshifts to "1" instead of starting in "D' and only downshifting to "2".
The car just feels faster and pulls harder if I start in "2".
The setup is a 383 w/ SR, 2500 stall, beefed up tranny and 3.08 gears (3.75's going in Friday)
What have you seen??

I leave mine in "D" because if I do anything else, it won't shift quick enough.
Of course, there could be something wrong with my car also, but as long as it's in "D" no problems.
At the very least, I get consistency.

I've only been to the strip once and I tried a bunch of different ways to laungh and my times were all over the place. I also forgot to turn of ASR most of the time. The fastest time I had though was when I had ASR off and started in D.

I'm going with my buddy in his '86 coupe (the car in question). I built the motor for him and trying to gain a few tenths and was curious what everyone does for their launch
Look for a '86 (with '96 kit) black C4 with a grand sport stripe.

My problem is that as soon as I launch my tires spin and it immediately shifts into second from spinning so fast.

The position of the shifter shouldn't affect the launch. Unless you have a manual valve body, the car should leave the line in first gear. The selector position MAY affect the upshift speeds or rpms, but not the launch or 60' times. If you are spinning so badly for the trans to select 2nd gear too soon, you need to adjust your starting line proceedure (or get tires) to get traction. Good luck, and...

What? What am I missing here?
I thought the transmission always starts off from a dead stop in 1 (1st gear). A lot of cars (maybe not Corvettes) take off in 2 (second gear) when you have the selector in the #2 position, to give better traction in snow and mud. Why would you what to do that in a drag race?
I always leave the line with the ASR off and the tranny in 1, when I am being serious about accelerating quickly and slip it up to 2 around 4500 rpm. Otherwise, I simply leave it in D, where it takes off in first gear, and shifts normally (unless as you said, spinning becomes a problem off the line and then it will shift up to second gear prematurely).

My governor is FUBAR, so I launch in 1, the car automatically shifts into 2nd, then I shift into D, the car doesn't even get close to the redline in 3rd with my 2.59's to need OD.
I need to fix my governor, as the 700R4 has a safety, which I guess is cannot be bypassed, the car cannot be held in 1st gear, 1st is always automatic.
But the car will start in 2nd gear if you have the indicator on 2.

I launch in "D" and roll into the throttle to minimize/avoid wheel spin stock street tires.
A stock 700R/4 will start in "1" with the shifter in any fwd position.
On some Vettes the shifter boot gets bunched up and won't let you actually put the shifter in true "1" position. You may be able to overcome this by removing the boot and repositioning it slightly.
