Default ZF6 clutch - what will hold 1000 hp ?

Ive got a forced induction build im doing, with plans for nitrous on top of that

what started this whole build plan was my spec stage 3+ clutch began slipping when temps got cooler (more power) with the e85, 15psi boost , and 75 shot nitrous.

I have found a pull type Mcleod street twin clutch (which is discont’d). They say it has a 1200 hp rating, but a user reported it slipping on the dyno at only 870 rwhp. It has organic discs. I talked wirh Fred at Mcleod and they said the reason they didnt do ceramic discs was bc they had Valeo pull type pressure plates break apart under high power levels with nitrous. He told me my key is finding a push type clutch. That would work.

i spoke with the guy at ‘Ram or Luk? (I cant remember and he acted like their push type clutch conversions couldnt hold any more than 800 hp.

SPEC claims they have a pull type twin ceramic disc clutch for our transmissions that can handle 1200 hp. But I an skeptical bc it prob uses one of the new, lower quality korean replica pressure plates - and if it does that would mean it would have the same issue that Mcleod users had with the pressure plate breaking in high HP applications. A user here has told me they have broken this clutch as well (i’ll have to get them to clarify how it broke)

so if anyone has any clutch recommendations, for behind a black tag zf6 - let me know

I had heard the zr1 pull type pressure plate has higher clamp force, but its thicker and I dont know what other mods to bellhousing, fork, ball stud, etc. to make it aork

im trying to avoid this from happening (photo below) , under boost and

nitrous spray

I would talk to Mike Norcia at RAM, he was very helpful in helping me choose a clutch for my slightly modded LT4.

he is the same guy that told me his dual disc push conversions were good to 800hp.

800hp isnt that wild a number anymore

i told him about the SPEC pull type dual disc, with ceramic discs that SPEC says is good to 1200 hp and he said no way it is

I got a Spec Sage 5 Product Number SC425Y for my built boosted LT1. Spec claims it can withstand 1008hp and it functions just like a stock pull style clutch and it also works with my Fidanza Aluminum flywheel. I went with this option versus the competition because all the other clutches required converting the Pull style clutch over to a push style clutch and that would require quite a bit of fab work. Granted I do not have too many miles on my build I am pretty impressed that the drivability isn't bad at all considering as it's a "race clutch-not for street driving" according to the manufacturer.

It is a steel flywheel. And while it isn't on the shelf it is available. My clutch is being built now by them. I just ordered direct.

Don't mean to hijack but will the stock ZF6 clutch setup in good shape hold 500 crank horsepower?

dont know, but i know the stage 2 kevlar clutch (bought from carolina clutch in 2002) hub broke loose from the disc on me in 2006 during a highway pull (requiring tow/flatbed home)

was 355 rwhp/355 rwtq at that time
with occasional nitrous hits to 445 rwhp/525 rwtq power level

no it's a single disc clutch, unfortunately the only picture I could find of it was it installed before the engine was dropped in

Just curious. What's your current vehicle weight?

Serious question, what about the rearend, outer stub shafts etc? I posted a few months ago about this because I’m considering a single turbo setup with either ls or sbc in my 6 speed 89. Making the power is the easy part.

Does McLeod make a push type rxt that will fit? Plenty of people making big power with those
