Default 86 corvette with t5wc swap cable to vss problems

86 corvette bone stock except for k and n filter and muffler delete. 'The car was an original 4 +3 until the overdrive unit gave out and i swapped in a t5 world class tranny out of an 89 trans-am. Car drives excellent with not issues or codes except for code 24. I have been driving the car like this for a while but now i need to pass California emissions and the Service engine soon light can't be on. I have done research as to how to turn it off but i can not find anything definitive. i have installed an intellitronix speedometer sensor adapter part number s9013, which is an 8-pulse generator hall effect, which was connected to the yellow wire coming from the stock tranny speedo harness. after installing this part it still threw code 24. any guidance is appreciated. thanks

Does your speedo show correct speed? It goes to the dash first, then to the ecm. The dash changes the signal to the ecm. You can always burn a prom with the code 24 deleted.

Ok, I can't help with the code 24, but please show us some pictures of the WCT5 install and how the shifter fits in the console and such. What did you do about the driveshaft and torsion channel? I have an extra WCT5 in the shop, and I love how they always seem to shift like butter. Details! We want details!

Pull the bulb for the SES light out of the telltale panel for a few days.

Doesn't work-they check that it comes on with key on engine off and then goes off when you start the car. Kali smog sucks.....

to OP-use a scan tool to see what the ecm is seeing for speed mph.

right now the speedo marks zero. does not move at all. Im thinking that burning a chip might be the way to go. Any good chip burners here you guys can recommend.?

sure i can post some pics of the preliminary mock up trans bracket to torsion tunnel.. shifter location is about 6 inches from the bottom of the ac/radio face plate and a little more towards the passenger side. i fixed this by making a custom offset shifter handle. works great. the stock 4+3 driveshaft fits perfect with the exception of having to mill the lip of the yoke where the rear seal of the tranny is about 1/4 of an inch. the hardest part of the swap was the bracket if you have a welder and patience its easy, tranny to torsion tunnel, and getting rid of this dam code 24. I reused everything from the 4+3. only thing thats different is the tranny.

Did your T5 originally have a VSS or was it maybe the last of the cable driven with a cluster mounted DRAC module for the electronic cluster.

Yeah...what he is alluding to, is if your T5 already had the VSS it would output the same 2000 ppm as the 4+3. TBH that device you purchased doesn't output the correct ppm.

So you've got something like this currently

?

Your cable driven is how many tooth? The VSS reference in that T5 swap now sells for 300$+ when you can find one.

http://www.abbott-tach.com/era.htm

The code 24 delete would work if you're smog is due soon-before you could get the right adaptor. How's your soldering skills? Your prom is UV erasable.

im favoring more the idea of modifying the prom. what does UV erasable mean?

There is a small round window in the middle of the prom. Peel off the sticker and expose it to UV light to erase-then can be reprogrammed. Or unsolder it-and solder in a reflashable prom. How soon is your smog due?

First off there should be a warning about peeling that sticker off and exposing the chip to UV light. If you do this, you may render your PROM useless and your vehicle will be dead in the water. I would advise against taking a soldering iron to my one and only memcal as well. In my experience, a 4k PROM will erase in a few hours in good ole Hawaiian sunshine and a 256k took an entire week. The '165 ECMs use 128k...I made a home brew UV eraser but found I'm much happier using EEPROMs that works like a flash drive.

This is kinda OT but does the non-functioning speedometer not cause any driveability issues on your '86?

My '90 when purchased was sort of a unfinished T56 swap. PO didn't hook up the VSS so of course no speedo. Upon deceleration approaching a stop, engine would stall 100% of the time. Work around to this annoyance was to pop the clutch and depress it basically jump starting with the clutch. Now that I got everything hooked up and a functioning speedo, no problem!

That's my page and I'm not even using that particular VSS in my t5.

GM made a few different 'bullet' VSS for the T5/TH350. The ebay one you linked should work fine. Most people just use whatever gears they have and run a dakota box to change the ratio. Taking the tailshaft off the T5 to change the drive gear is a pain anyway.
