Default brake problems.....help, please

i installed new calipers in my 1992 coupe, the rear are fine, the front calipers clap when i use them, every time i press the brake pedal, i hear the calipers clamp down on the rotor. when i release the brake, i hear them pull off the rotor. if work the pedal up and down real fast, but lightly, it sounds like machine gun fire.....what gives?

also, i did the richard petty experience at disney this past weekend, if your interested i'll tell how it went...

thanks in adavnce guys

did you grease the pin that supports the caliper?

thats all I can think off... unless the pads are not COMPLEATLY in their positions. meaning, they are off the caliper a bit.

I have done the Monster Mile here in Dover at Dover Downs... It was cool! I didn't drive, but the ride is well worth the $75.00!!!!!! :auto:

:iagree:
It sounds like you need to grease the caliper slide pins.

Just out of curiosity, do you still have the clips (can't remember their name) that attach to the end of the pads to keep them in place? If I recall, I had this same problem about 5 years ago, and it was because I didn't have the clips on the end of the pads...

:iagree:
Sounds like a clip problem. The pads would rattle around in there something aweful without the clips.

there is no pad rattling, the piston actuates when the pedal is depressed (clamps down - clunk) and then the piston pulls off the rotor when i take my foot off the brake (the second noise), that is where the noise comes from.
any thoughts would be appreciated.

I hear what you're saying Doug, but are the clips on the ends of the pads?

Mine did the same. It was missing the anti-rattle clips on the end of the pads.

Those clips actually hold the caliper in place. When i swapped out to a z07 kit i thought i didnt need them. every time i would hit the brake i would hear a clunk, and on release too. Even over bumps at low speeds i could hear the calipers banging around. Of course my old idiot mechanic had no clue and said it was normal..  i figured it out when i got home. Although my front calipers do click very slightly when i use them repeatedly at very low speeds....

None of my pads have these clips  I am Refering to a thread a few days ago which showed a clip on the ends of each pad. I sometimes have a clunking noise when lightly applying the brakes at low speeds from the right rear. Do I need to go to the dealer to get these clips?

If you've got rebuilt, not brand-new OEM calipers, I think they were rebuilt using the wrong piston O-ring seals.
So you've got too much seal "roll-back".
This O-ring twists a small amount as the piston travels out when the brakes are applied, then it twists back - "rolls back" - and this action pulls the piston back into the caliper bore, since of course disc brake calipers have no return springs.
If there's too much seal roll-back, you get excessive piston travel, pad rattle, and excessive foot pedal travel.
You might take those calipers back, explain what's happening, get another set of calipers.
Regards,
R

I thought the clips were only on the '88 and new 4 piston calipers. I don't remember seeing them on the '87 and older single piston units......not absolutely sure, but I know my '88 has them

The anti-rattle clips go on the pads and not the calipers. And 388 is right, they are so the calipers don't rattle, not the pads. dsky has the exact same simptoms that I had with my car a few years back...

DSKY....i know the problem and my vette sat for about 1 year because of this problem.....
ok let me ask questions....
so you did the break job and everything looks good and the you drop it down push the peddle to the floor and it goes all the way down then you let it up and do it again and again and then you start the car and they are just locked up and you are not able to even spin your tire if it is in the air...??? i bet i am right? let me know if i am and so i can tell you what you need to do..

example mine would work and i would drive it maybe like 10 feet and i would stop on the break and those bad boys would be on lock down...yeah eveyone told me to grease the pin and blah blah blah....but after i took my vette to a friend he fixed all the issues!

Thanks Kevin :yesnod:

dsky,

If your pads do not have the clips on them then that is your problem. Take the pads out of the calipers and put the clips on. Your problem will disappear after that...

dsky, the "bias springs" are the clips! That's what GM calls them.
