A question for '92 and '93 owners who have changed gear ratios...
...What is the procedure for changing the speedometer? I don't plan on using the speedometer gear, but instead wanted to do it within the computer. Is this done within the chip or is it done within the ECM?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Can't do it from the computer for our years... :( Mine is an A4 and I had to remove the tailshaft of the transmission and replace the gears (along with the VSS). I'm not quite sure what the procedure is for a M6.

:iagree:
I'm not real sure what you need to do to fix it but I know for a fact it can't be done in the computer. Kinda sucks. Yet another reason why I don't yet have 4.10 gears.

I'm with the other guys. Got the A4 which required replacing the tailshaft gears (both plastic) and the VSS. Yours should be the same in that respect. No ECM mods required.

If you have an A4 and you are changing to 3.07 from 2.59, you don't need to pull the tailshaft -- just install a new speed sensor from Jeff Kopp. He can tell you which one.

There is an electronic box which is supposed to do the trick. A discussion of this recently was here. The black box is sold by Abbott for ~$145. I purchased one recently, but it's been too cold to work on my car (January, New England, no garage). The box has 4 wires. Two go to +12V and ground, and the other two splice in between the speed sensor and the computer. It intercepts the sine wave coming from the speed sensor and substitutes a sine wave of a different frequency. Inside the box is a big dip switch, which you set depending on the desired correction ratio. As soon as I can work on the car without wearing eskimo clothing, I'll hook it up and report here.

Thanks, MTVette! I just read the other thread and now it all makes sense. My mechanic also quoted me $125 for the Speed Sensor, and I was thinking I could get it cheaper elsewhere. From the looks of the other thread, I would venture to say that Eckler's is selling the Abbot poduct with a slight markup, and that the work shops are getting a slight discount on it.
Please let me know how the install turns out for you...

I changed my gears, it's less then $50 and it takes longer to get the car in the air then it does to change it.. I also heard that the "black box" can mess with the ASR and ABS... just my $.02

I'm with fsr402. I got the two gears and the sensor from Jeff Kopp for less than $40. Changing them out is pretty straight forward and you don't have to worry about running those wires. :steering:

I ordered the steel gears from Doug rippie which cost slightly more than the plastice but looking back it was probably a waste of money. Just my .02

Thanks, everybody. I just ordered the plastic speedo gear from Jeff Kopp for $3 and some change. From what I understand, there is a plastic gear in there now and it has put up with some serious abuse and works like a charm.
I see no reason to spend the extra money on the speed sensor, since I will not be putting a different gear ratio in the car after this install. BTW, Jeff mentioned that the 3.73 speedo gear is the largest one GM makes...

I had a 4.09 installed in my 93 about 5 years ago. Used a speedo gear, no pcm calibration. 5 years of abuse, theres a slight wine but its gettin rebuilt before my motor goes in.
