Default Rack and pinion swap

Can one swap a 1989 rack in a 1987? Does it have the same mounting locations? Can you just swap out inner tie rods?
If it will swap out, any changes in driving characteristics?
I have a chance to pick up 1989 rack for great deal, just wondering if it can be made to work.

Thanks

I don't know what the differences are but my parts book says 84-88 is one rack and 89-92 a different one.

Actually it's '84 to '87 and then '88+ but if you're willing to swap 'inner' tie rods it can be done. A few have mentioned doing this. I doubted this for quite some time because I found some erroneous GM SPO information about different inner tie rods for some '84 - '87 years. That information I believe wasn't correct and if you're talented, have good inners, boots and other internals are fine you should be good.

I've seen all that you posted but it's SPO errors. Here from the same GM SPO Parts Catalog are the parts list content for the Steering Gears. Notice part # difference for 'inner tie rods'. Earlier than '87 will match the '87 Chart, '88 and later will match for the most part the '88 Chart. Inner tie rods are the what determines the width difference between early and late. Your images are just very 'generic' images that pointed out GM Parts Groups.

87 or 88, whatever. Makes no difference to me. I only posted what GM put on their michro fiche cards.

You're an imbecile! Does the fact that I didn't state anything escape you? What exactly am I wrong about that I have to admit to? Maybe you just have difficulty comprehending the English written word. By linking a GM printed document, how does that make me wrong? Are you implying I wrote the fkn thing?

Thanks for the info, WVZR1. I also heard that difference in track width was made up by longer tie rod for '88 and up. Just was not positive. Tried to go to a couple parts stores to compare side be side, but they never have anything on the shelves.
Best I could do was compare some pictures from parts online. Tie rod on bottom is for '84-'87.

Thanks again.

it will work. I have done it. I am running a later model rack in my 86. Just swap the inners and you will be fine.

Of course he is. I have said on here before that no one here knows more about these cars than WVZR-1.(one or two don't believe this). For you to make the above statement just proves the first statement of my previous post.
