Fuel Pump Replacement - Say it ain't so.....
Looking at the shop manual for my 89, it says to remove the fuel tank to change the pump  (Another thing on the winter list !)
I've done enough work on the car to fully understand the onion principle, but this is beyond belief. Looks like it should be quite easy from the top under the gas filler door. How'd you do yours ?

It is so, the fuel pump is in the gas tank. However, it is not a big deal to drop the tank.

You do not need to drop the fuel tank. Just remove the gas door assembly and unbolt the flange to the tank underneath. Use a new gasket on the tank flange and be sure to replace the strainer or sock with the pump. I've heard that it is a lunch break job, not a winter project. :)

It ain't so, it ain't so!!!!!
Just yank the fuel door, remove a fuse, a couple of bolts and hose clamps and you're good to go. :)

I guess the shop manual needs to pump up the hours on occassion ;)

STOP! I did it on my '89 lst week. No need to remove the tank. Just pull the fuel door (4 torx screws), remove cap, pull the rubber spill ring - disconenct the drain, unplug the electrical connector, unhook three fuel lines (vent, feed, return), and remove the nine 10mm bolts. The whole pump & sender assembly lifts right out. Unhook the wire connector at the pump, and remove the old pump from the assembly by pushing up on the fuel flow connector block until it swings out. Reverse for install. Counting cleaning the rubber gasket, the whole thing took about 30-40 minutes. Don't smoke!

Re: (1MoorTym)
You might have already thought of this. But just make sure to discharge any static electricity that you may have built up on yourself, static electricity is always worse in the winter months, check out this article..

I accidentally started a fuel cell on fire once, it wasn't pretty...

Re: (superlund)
Thanks for the heads up guys...I knew about the smoking, but didn't think about the static.
