Rear wheel bearing replacement questions?
Hello All,
I have a friend with a 91 C4. It has a rear wheel bearing that has gone bad.
Are there any special precautions to changing one?
Any special tools needs?
Anyone have photos of changing one?

its not hard, just annoying.
you need a T55 torx, infact, you need 2 or 3... there is a good chance you will sheer off the tips...
there is a big socket, too... I don't remember, I think its 36mm, but I don't remember for sure.
it can easily be done in your driveway with jack stands. I do recommend air tools...

I did mine about a year ago, should have gone ahead and replaced the universal joints on the axles at the same time since I just had to replace those this morning. It would have been alot easier to do the wheel bearings with the axles removed.

Doing your homework I see
I have a large air compressor at my house, but the air tools are really bad and have little torque

Brian,
Whatever you want to change we can work on.
If you have a bench vise, we can do the u joints the old fashion way......
Your ride, your choice......Just let me know....

This thread may help. I did notremove the haft shaft out to get to the 3 55T bolts in the back of the knuckle. You do however have to get the car fairly hi.

Re: Rear wheel bearing replacement questions? (jim482)
And most importantly use threadlock so the bolts do not back out of the rear knuckle. Mine did even when torqued to the proper torque. It was helped along by a corduroy cottage road this past summer. Coincidently, the only bolt to back out appeared to not have threadlock on it even though I had given the technician a bottle of it to put on all of the bolts. I have had no problems since. i cannot imagine what kind of damage would occur if that bolt had have backed out at freeway speeds. Best of luck.

Re: (scorp508)
Luckily this job turned out to be a simple rear brake and rotor change....
No Vise or wheel bearing needed.
Thanks to all who replied......
