Default exhaust manifolds on a 85

A muffler shop guy told me to put new manifolds on it the motor would have to be pulled. Is this so? Can you remove the bolts while its in the car?

I replace both gaskets with the motor in but the pass is harder. Drivers was easy.

I just recently pulled my 85 exhaust manifolds to remove smog piping on them and welded up the holes on them. I unbolted the exhaust manifolds from the Y pipe under the manifold and then all the bolts on top. I then pulled the manifolds out from the top slick and very easy without any problem what so ever. I would not use that guy or shop as he is either lying or has no idea.

I'd second this opinion.

Were not talking about a Ford model T

my 84 manifolds came off no problem, they look the same as 85. tedious on pass side. but they come off. get a new mechanic. why do you need new manifolds, there stainless-steel.

No it is not necessary to pull the engine to remove the exhaust manifolds.

I removed all the smog stuff and those tubes on top of the manifolds are still there i capped them off though.I put new valve covers, water pump, new coolant hoses, removed the ac compressor the ac lines were removed before i got it and put in a delete pulley there. Trying to dress up the motor and those ugly tubes stick out. I gutted the smog pulley and am still using it. I thought about getting a smog delete pulley but i dont like the way it looks and having to get a different belt size. There is WAY more room around the engine without those smog components everywhere. Other than that i dont mind the original manifolds
