Opinions on which gear manufacture
After much soul searching and calculation and MUCH help from the great people on the forum I have decided to go with 3.92 gear ratio. NOW which manufacture? I have gotten quote from Randy's ring and pinion and they say they sell the Yukon gears and "they are the same as the Dana's". Have Dana 44 and M6. Would like feed back on noise, reliability, and durability, etc.

You should try to get the real Dana gears if possible. I have a hook up for Dana 4.10's, if you are interested.

I bought my gears from http://www.viperconnection.com but I'm not sure if they have the 3.90 gear sets or net. Check it out and see.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (Zix)
I checked out the web site and they only offer 3.55;3.73;and 4.10 ratios. I am pretty set in wanting the 3.90's because of the issue of having to shift to 5th before the end of 1/4 mile. Also at 6300 rpm my mile per hour will be 124 by the tire size chart and I am hoping to be close to that.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (96GS#007)
I have NOS 125 shot. Engine stock, Corsa cat back, air foil, and SLP claw intake. Dyno 418 rwhp and 540 rwt. Best time so far 12.5 et and best mph 119. This was done on Dunlop street tires. I will be going to drag radials when the new gears are installed. The rev limiter has been bumped up to 6700 and the upper end NOS cut off is at 6400 rpm. Hope to get to the 11's with new gears.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (gtsyellow)
A stock LT4 has a heck of a better chance of living than a L98 or LT1. I take mine to 63-6500 and a few times at 6700 with no problems.
I use Dana viper gears, no noise at all. But don't know about the 3:90s

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (RichS)
Rich S, Are you getting all the way down in fourth or are you having to shift to fifth at the far end? I have been shifting at 6400 anyway. That's is at the standard rev limit for the LT4 it is just a margin above so I won't bump the limiter.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (owensLT4)
Let me give some input here. I sell gears and build rears for Corvettes only. I want to say there is not a real 3.90 available that is not a modified Dana 44 gear. What I mean by that is they take a Dana 44 truck which not the same as a Viper or Corvette, they are known as Super 44's. They weld a sleeve on the pinion so that the Corvette pinion bearing will work. The ring gear is the same on either one, its just the Super 44 pinion shaft is twice the size of a regular Dana 44. Either stick with the 3.73 or move to the 4.10.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (snaketr)
isnt that interesting. I have 4.09s in my 93 and yeah.. i do shift into 5th about 20 feet from the traps or hit stock redline. But thats with the stock motor, i went 110 mph consistent doing that. With my 388 going 7500 rpm i dont think 4.09 are gonna hurt me much more than 3.92s
if youre gonan shift at stock limiter 3.92 wud be better. :yesnod:
and gear manufacturer isnt the big deal with gears, its the installation that matters.

One other tidbit...the above mentioned the sleeve is welded. Those that I've seen are spot welded. I saw one and know of two other high hp cars (400+ at the wheels) break those spot welds while launching with drag radials. Ugly sounding.

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (96GS#007)
Thanks for the info I will look closely when I get mine. According to the parts house these are new and not sleeved or reground, the brand name is Yukon. Any info from users of this brand????

Re: Opinions on which gear manufacture (LT4POWR)
I called Randy's ring and pinion this evening and they said that the yukon brand name was a relabeled dana gear set. I will know by Thursday because I ordered a set with the understanding I can return them if they don't meet or exceed the dana product. We'll see.
