Looking for a good ODB 1 scanner for my 86
Hey guys, is there a decent ODB 1 scanner you would recommend that does more than just give me the codes out of my 86? Trying to debug this issue of the car running like it has no fuel when you give it a little gas it chokes and acts like it's not getting any fuel but the fuel pressure gauge shows it having around 32psi when idling. Before I throw anymore parts at it I think I need a decent scanner. Already have the FSM. Thanks.

It does stuff.
Still figuring it out!
EDIT: ITS A 9690, NOT A 9630

Yes!
It'll do more than pull codes. Will show you sensor/ecm states in real time. You have an 86, which are apparently better ecm-wise than 85's in some way I do not yet understand, but it works on an 85... so it will work on yours... maybe even better.

Mine is also an Actron with OBD II capability that I needed an OBD1 adapter for, then I use DataMaster for anything else.

Will the Actron 9690 show any data on the injectors? My injectors Ohm out ok but I suspect they are dirty/clogged since they are original even though the car only has 34k miles they are still 34 years old and the car cruises fine but sputters and bogs when you initially accelerate. No codes.

I think you believe there is more data in the OBD1 ECM feed than there really is. There is nothing that specific to each injector or anything about the brake fluid level.
Basically you get to see what the old ECM got, which is commanded pulse width, whether the O2 is reading rich/lean, BLMs, engine load, timing advance, MAF g/s readout, etc.

Melting Slicks
1986 cars (with 86 specific $32 mask bins) have difficulty connecting and scanning at 8192 baud compared to 87-89 cars. Suggest you get an ALDL -> USB cable and try DataCat first, assuming you have a laptop available.

NitrousMan, I'm currently having an issue similar to you, my 91 has a miss and dead spot when accelerating. It was suggested that it may be an issue with the MAP sensor. My Actron showed no voltage to the sensor when it should read 5 volts. You may want to look at the same thing. Going to check mine this weekend.

What about 1320 Electronics and ALDLScan?

Vader86, I'm not looking for the Actron to tell me anything about brake fluid levels on the newer cars I'm looking for it to be able to cycle the ABS pump on newer cars so I can flush the brake fluid properly. Someone said it does that but I can't find it on the Actron feature list for the 9690.

No MAP sensor on the 86 that I know of just a MAF sensor.

The Snap On MT 2500 has more power and capabilities than most of the little scanners. They make an ABS cartridges for GM cars thru 1998 available on Fleabay. I love mine and have not scratched the surface yet. It is a bit of an investment but worth every penny!
