Default 700R4 rebuild for daily driver. shift kit or not? 1984 vette

Well my tranny finally broke on the daily driver 84. First major problem I've had. So I found a friend of a friend who is gonna rebuild it and do all the work for $650!! Good deal and he said he can add a shift kit for $125 more which also sounds like a good deal. The car is driven about 80 miles per day!! Would the shift kit effect longevity of the tranny or cause any daily driving problems? I think I am gonna go for the shift kit, but thought I should ask first.. TIA :chevy

In theory, the shift kit should make your trans last longer because its not creating as much heat during shorter shifts. I had a shift kit in my LeMans for years as a daily driver. I don't like automatics without shift kits. I like to feel the shift. :)

It depends on what you like for shift feel. A shift kit will give quicker and firmer shifts; and, as stated, it should extend tranny life too.

I had a TransGo-like shift kit installed when my A4 was recently rebuilt and realy like the effect.

Since I drag race, I also had a little higher stall TC (old was 1,500rpm; new is 2,000rpm) installed with great results.

My 80 mile/day daily driver has a shift kit in it as well and I like it. I like the feeling of my head snapping back when it shifts. :D

I'd opt for the shift kit, but..........
This isn't the same 'friend' that built your 383 engine right? I recall you posting before how poorly it is performing? If it is, I wouldn't let that guy touch my door bell to push it.. :D

One suggestion I got for my 85 tranny was to upgrade to 88 or later parts. There were several improvements to the pump and valve assembly.

Depends on what you want, like it was said above. I had the TransGo kit removed from mine when I had it rebuilt and like it stock just fine.

It's a daily driver and I don't race, so that influenced my decision.

Ok I am definitely gonna go with the shift kit!! Should I opt for a stall converter also?!! No this isn't the same guy who built the 383... How much should a stall converter cost extra? since it is a driver I would think about a 2000 rpm stall would be plenty..

I opted for a 2,000rpm TC since I too only drive on street tires.

Grant Transmissions (phone # on my site) can supply you a modified Grand National 2,000RPM TC for around $225; installation should not be an issue since the tranny and TC have to come out for rebuild anyway.

What kind of gains did you see with the Grand National TC?

Just got a Trans-Go Stage 2 shift kit installed Friday. I love it...very firm shifts....Not as radical as the shift kit I had in my 1970 GTO....that 400TH would chirp 2nd even if I wasn't getting into it....If I did have it WOT it would leave blackmarks when it hit 2nd

Ahh....those were the days....

Anyway....definitely go with the shift Kit...also go with a Trans Go shift kit.....the general consensus on this board is it is a much better shift kit than the B&M

You can vary the intensity of shifts in a 700. Just cosider that a crazy shift like tire chirp at 1200 rpm(yes its possible) will not hurt the tranny but puts stress on rears, u-joints, tires and mounts. And a converter is great but will be no fun in bumper 2 bumper traffic and no fun on gas milage either. So if youre cool with this stuff go for it it is awsone.
