Default Intake Gasket: Quick and Dirty?

My current issue is burning oil. A lot of it.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ke-plumes.html

I went to tighten down the intake manifold bolts and they were all loose. That didn't help much so I decided to replace the gaskets and reseal it.

I read a few threads and Ozzstar's great videos and decided to jump in.

I started pulling things off after photo documenting everything.
[/url]

Unlike Ozzstar I'm pulling things aside instead of removing them (when possible) like the throttle body and fuel rails.

The bolt holder is a great idea.

I watched Ozzstar beat on his intake to get it off. Mine is probably overdue for service as soon as I took the bolts off it literally lifted off...

Probably not a lot of sealing going on there.

Those China walls were probably more like China fishnet stockings.

I have a lot of cleaning to do before putting everything back together. If I don't have too many leftover parts and it runs I'll declare victory. Hopefully this takes care of one of the leaks.

good luck with the repair. quick question -

are you burning oil, or leaking oil?

My current issue is burning oil. A lot of it.
but everything i'm seeing is you have gasket issues. burning oil, as in (valve) stem seals/valve guides, piston rings, etc, or are all your issues due to external leaks, bad gaskets, etc..

hopefully, all your issues are due to gaskets, seals, etc..

If the intake gaskets are bad/leaking, manifold vacuum can pull oil (vapor) from the valley area and burn it. So it could be, and likely was leaking oil and burning it.

OP, you should take a pic of looking down the intake port(s) at the intake valves and post it for S&G's.

My intake on the '94 leaks too. I gotta rip it off this spring and reseal everything.

Probably toss some new injectors in while I have the rails off.

Burning oil as in it's leaking onto the cat and smoking.

Will do.

How far into the ports do you want to look?

I had taken the injectors off and had them cleaned a while ago. They should be good.

never gave that much thought, but . those would have to be some seriously bad gaskets.

As loose as this intake was it wouldn't surprise me if that was happening.

Normally when an engine is burning oil, that means it's burning it out the exhaust, not on the exhaust. Good luck.

Yes, I realize the vernacular discrepancy. But technically it's burning oil, just not in the engine... well, not as bad as it is outside the engine!

Definitely an easier fix.

on my l98 i use hylomar on my gaskets. (except i did use a 1/4 bead of rtv for china wall) i know, i know. supposed to go on dry.

i just don't trust the dryness.

hylomar is incredible stuff. unfortunately for them, i have never in my life seen such an amazing product with such horrible marketing and sales programs.

I'm guessing that dry gaskets rely on compression to make them seal. So that if you try to re-use one it you'll have massive failure.

I'm going with The Right Stuff Black. A touch under the ends of the gaskets but otherwise dry. Then a solid bead on the walls.

I'm going to put a touch of The Right Stuff on the bolt threads. You shouldn't need a lot to prevent the oil migration.

I just completed my intake on my '95 LT1. I used the same video as a teacher, worked out great! Just remember to clean all surfaces with acid-tone, so all oil is removed and the sealer has something to stick to.

How hard was it to get your intake off? Did you have to beat on it?

What are these holes (see red arrow) for? There are four of them?

I guess they are to hold the gaskets? I didn't look at the old ones too carefully.
