Ring and Pinion fitment question?
I'm in the process of purchasing a 3.07 ring and pinion set from someone here on the forum. He had bought the set with the intention of putting them in his '87 Vette, but decided on 3.54s instead. I'm just trying to verify that will fit in my existing carrier. I currently have 2.59s in my '91. Can anyone verify that the 3.07s will swap right in? Thanks, Tom.

No, you need the thick gear, that is the thin gear. I learned this the hard way.

84-87 = Series 1
88-96 = Series 2
Even though they're Dana 36's, they're different.
TA,
Your car is running that fast with 2.59's?!?!

Now, if he bought a standard 3.08 set, made for a 3 series carrier, then no, it will not fit. Thats what you have to find out.

I never heard this. I always knew series 2 as a size for the carrier, as well as series 3. If you had a series 2 carrier, it was the proper thickness for a gear ratio in the 2.xx range, and a series 3 was a carrier correct for a 3.xx gear ratio.

TA, BBA is correct. If you have a series 2 carrier and the gears are for a series 3 they will not fit.

Re: Ring and Pinion fitment question? (UB2 SLOW)
I'm really not positvie whether the set in question is the thick or thin version and niether is the guy I'm buying them from. I know that he bought the set to replace the 2.59s in his existing rear, but he never got as far as installing them before deciding to go with 3.54s instead. He also bought the set used so now I'm really confused about which version they are  . Well, I think I'm gonna take a chance and buy them because he's giving me a fantastic deal. I guess if they don't fit I can always re-sell them. Anyone know where I can get a bearing kit for the instal job? Thanks for the replies

TA, you can get the bearing kits from JEGS or any other aftermarket dealer. JEGS had one for about $130.00 if I remember right.

Ok guys, I got one further question to throw at you. The guy I'm lookoing to buy the set from (James Holley, here on the forum who BTW is a great guy to deal with) has the 3.07 that I'm looking at, as well as the 2.59, that came out of his car originally. My question is will he be able to tell by looking at the two gears, side by side, if they are both the same type.........thick vs. thin. How apparent is the difference, if at all. I'm assuming that if the two are the same type, then the 3.07 should fit in my car.......at least I think???

Re: Ring and Pinion fitment question? (TA)
I posted "Gear Facts of Life" in response to BadAzZ28's complaint of having been sold incorrect gears for his application. A read of that post may help clear things up for some.
First: All OE gears, are "thin gears" Second: The series, ie 2 or 3 series, case, has no reference to year model. Third: The case being refered to is the ring gear case. The case inside that the ring gear bolts to. NOT the aluminum diff housing that bolts to the "bat wing". In the Dana 36 ICA carrier, ratios 2.59:1 - 2.73:1 take the "2 series" (Dana part no. 707015X for the empty case) case. 3.07:1 and slower (numerically larger) ratios take the "3 series" (Dana part no. 707016X, empty) case.
A "thick" ring gear is an after market anomoly. It was created by the replacement manufacturers, in order to save their customers from having to buy the OE mandated case when changing gears across the case "break" line. If anyone is contemplating the purchase of OE (Dana) gears, they WILL be the thin gears and will require the correct series case.
I hope this helps clear up some of the "lore" and mystery surrounding gears, gear ratios, and changes, thereto.
