I am replacing the lifters on my 1987 C4. The car is stock and is used on weekends and the occasional autocross. I have decided to keep the car stock for now. Replace the lifters and button it up. I am looking at Summit Racing and I have narrowed it down to a Chevy Performance hydraulic roller lifter set - $124.97 or a Comp Cams hydraulic roller lifter set - $223.97. Most people I have spoken with had suggest the Comp Cams lifters. On line reviews are m'eh. Reports of early collapse of lifters whereas the Chevy Performance rated very high.

I am looking for some thoughts & experience and appreciate your input.

GM PN 12499225 is what you want to use. $124.97

I have them in a couple documented 400-560HP LTX and L98 based engine builds for members on this board.

GM makes a very good lifter for the money.

Thanks for the response, Will. I was planning on replacing the dogbones and the spider tray as well while I am there. Also looking at polylock rocker arm adjusting nuts to be sure.

A friend has suggested a replacement lifter with a bit higher lift to improve performance. Any thoughts there?

My initial thoughts, Roy. I think he was suggesting a replacement that would have a higher lift or not bleed down...perhaps a piddle valve lifter?

The dog bones and spider don't really wear out. Unless they got damaged somehow there's no reason to replace them.

Those GM lifters will do about anything you want to do with a hyd roller.

As I said, I have a couple people here that I've done engines for and the most recent - an L98 based 383 with AFR195s made over 560hp and turned 6800rpm before the base AFR spring package gave up. 1.6 rockers and the cam was .565 lift.

The one before that was an LT4 based 383 with AFR 210s and it made 463RWHP through a 4L60 auto with a 3000 stall. It turned 7000rpm before the valve train showed any signs of instability. 1.65 rockers and .597 lift.

Those GM lifters will do anything that needs to be done.

Higher lift for more power via the lifter rather than from the cam profile.

I was suggesting replacement rockers, 1.6 vs the 1.5 you have on there now to gain the additional lift. New springs also.

I think a friend has confused higher lift (ratio) ROCKERS for "lifters"...which can't very well have a meaningful impact on lift.
