My alternator just died! Best replacement?
I bought this AC Delco rebuilt alternator from Jeff Kopp in September of 2000 and it is dead (only 3k miles later) :mad . Do these things have a warranty? What should I replace it with???

if the warranty doesn't check out, go to a neighborhood AutoZone and get either a rebuilt alternator (~$75 with one year warranty) or a new alternator (~$125 with lifetime warranty). I'd go for the lifetime because of the 'vette's reputation eating alternators regularly. :seeya

I would check your electrical wiring for shorts. If it seems to be okay, rebuild the alternator. There is no reason that one properly rebuilt with new electronics cannot last as long as the original.

Is there any easy way to get the belt off? I tried to use a half inch breaker bar last time but there wasn't enough room between the tensioner and frame to get it off. I have seen the special tool that the mechanics use (it looks like a slim bar with a half inch attachment). Where can I get one? Napa?

I'd go for the new alternator over the rebuilt deal. We used to put rebuilt alternators in our Lincoln Town Car, and we'd find we'd be replacing it every other year. Then we finally just got a new one. Unfortunately with rebuilds, the warrantee dies before the alternator does.

FWIW, my Iceberg rebuild made it through its second HOT summer without a hiccup. Outside temps 80-96, A/C running, 40 miles daily, about 50% in stop and go traffic, with a very used battery attached - never below 13.6 volts at idle.

Alt question along these lines. Had the car in the shop today (stereo stuff). They ran the battery down to 11.4 volts before starting up again. It went up while driving around town, but back down to 13 volts at a stop. Then when I got it on the highway it went back to 13.9 volts. Now it seems to be staying in the 13.6-13.9 range. Did the alt just need time to recharge the battery? Or am I looking at yet another alt replacement?

If you have a lot of extra electronic equipment you should consider a higher amperage alternator. I went with a GM police package alternator,it is140 amp.

Well, I stepped up from the CS130 (stock Alt) to the CS144 found in the LT1 cars. The wiring is the same, Clock position is the same, only thing is the upper Alt. bracket may need to be clearanced a bit on the bottom side. I also don't know for sure if it will fit with the Air Pump. I have the Eliminator kit and I had to clearance the bottom of the bracket to get it to fit.
I am very happy with the install.
