What kinda p/s fluid to use?
I went to Pep Boys to pick up some Valvoline Syn P/S fluid, and when I got home, I compared the p/n(that says what the comparable GM part numer is) on the back of the bottle to the part number on in the owner's manual, and they aren't the same. I know alot of you guys run this fluid, but is there something else that I can use that I don't have to track all round town looking for?

I go to my local, friendly Chevy dealer and buy their stuff. It's twice as much as a parts store, but it's not like you go through a gallon of the stuff.
BTW, I had a Toyota mechanic (wife's car) tell me that Toyota recommends GM power steering fluid, because it's that good.

There was just a post on this the other day. I had Valvoline in the Corvette with no problems. But I also had it in my truck for somewhat less than a year, and it failed. I even had it tested by a lab, and it indeed had failed. My truck also has an aux PS cooler and uses the PS fluid for brake boost (hydroboost).
On advice from a truck forum, trying GM cold climate PS fluid in both the truck and Corvette. Will let you know. Has a nice minty fresh scent ( )
Good Luck with your choice and let us know what you find out.

It's best to use the GM stuff. But I have used Valvoline, Mobil and Castrol p/s oils with great success. Its like engine oils, its your choice. Some are better than others, just keep it clean and the reservoir full.

What about Penzoil PSF? I have a bottle of it and would have already used it but my BIG syringe didn't fit into the PS fluid container and I didn't find a smaller one yet. ;)
Maybe I too go and get the GM stuff to be sure its good.

I realize I may still be the "new kid on the block" around here, but isn't power steering fluid actually the
same exact thing as transmission fluid? You just pay more for it in those little 6 or 8 oz bottlettes?

In the old days, you could interchange p/s fluid and trans fluid. In today's cars, it does not work that way. Only use the proper p/s fluid for your car.

If that's true, guess it is time to start marketing my newest invention, front and rear brake fluid. It costs a little more than regular brake fluid, but everyone knows the front brakes work harder than the rear brakes. My fluid compensates for that :smash:

Ok then, jackdaroofer. What do you use for your p/s fluid? As for me, I use the synthetic p/s stuff. I would never put the syn p/s fluid in my tranny. Would you?

My Penzoil PSF bottle says in the back that it is also for automatic gear boxes??? They also make ATF but I haven't checked if the label says it can be used as p/s fluid ;)
