what is the stock rear end of a1984 coup automatic? also what is the best upgraded to rear end for this car to gain torque without competely ruining mpg?

It would be a Dana 36 (called D36 for short here on the forum). IT might have 3.07 gears. If you look under the center arm rest or in the glove box you should see a build sheet sticker. If you find code "G92" that would be the "performance axle package" with the 3.07 gears. If not you probably have something like 2.59 or 2.73.


Unless you do a lot of mods to the engine, the 3.07 would be the best "all around" performance gear for you.

I thought the rear for an auto was a D36 with 2.92 gearing while a manual was a D44 with 3.09 based on what I've read.

84 only had dana 36 code would be g44 3.07 gm1 2.59 or gu2 2.73

3.31 was out there too. No 2.59 in 84.

The Z51 package with AT included the 3.07 gears IIRC. The 3.31 gears were a separate order -at least they were in '84.

Regardless of the transmission all '84 MY cars were 3.07 ratio except for the "FEW" VERY FEW 3.31 ratio cars. There were none of the mentioned ratios in the 2's NONE.

They were ALL also D36 builds - no D44 production for resale in '84

There's many '84 cars that are "other than 3.07" presently because when they failed many got "whatever was available for the least amount of money"!
