Default C4 6Speed Flywheel Question

I'm having my engine rebuilt and reinstalled. I brought the car not running, so I do not know the shape the trans was in. Plus with the engine out I'm replacing the clutch.

The shop doing it says my flywheel is toast, so I need a new one.

My question is are all the C4 6Speed flywheels the same?

If you want to get a GM flywheel, better sit down, they go for $890

Some people have had success with F-body flywheels, but I don't know too much about that.

Go to www.callawaycars.com and check their garage sale, I've seen take off flywheels for $75.

I think what RWCII is saying in that his flywheel does not look like all the pictures he has seen of 'dual mass' flywheels. I think he may not have the stock clutch in the car he bought.

He is asking "are all ZF 6 speed flyweels the same dual mass design, or is the pre-LT1 (L98) cars different than the 92-up flywheels. Right RWCII?

RWCII, does the clutch disk have springs in it? Maybe it was replaced with a f-body or single mass flywheel/clutch before?

Jeff just quoted me a price of about $700. I ended up getting an aluminum single mass flywheel and a Spec stage 2 clutch for not much more than that. :yesnod:

All L98 and LT1/4's use the same exact flywheel from '89-'96. I've got one sitting on my desk at the office right now. If I can remember, I'll take a pic of it in the AM and post. -Jeff

Jeff, he has already seen pictures of dual mass flywheels and says his doesn't look like that. I sent him some pics as well as some other members already. That's why I asked him to see if the disk has springs in it. I think his has been changed out to single mass before he got it.

The web site said they had one. I ended up buying a used one from a forum member he said it was fine when I installed it my clutch chatters now when I let it out it was a worped flywheel Boy am I pissed. :mad I priced one out GM since I'm a tech at the dealership my cost on one is like $600 and something. F body flywheels are single mass and $100 used, they might have to be machined...oppinions vary on this one, 90 thou came off mine. ram makes the clutch combo you want which is the vette pressure plate and camaro disc. a solid disc on a single mass flywheel will hit HARD, i was in a supra today with a solid disc on an aluminum flywheel and the clutch just went WHAM under really hard shifts. the sprung hub camaro disc will make your life a lot easier in the rain also

I talked to the shop yesterday and it was a single mass flywheel, and the new clutch is for a single mass fly wheel.

So the new questions is where do I get a good used or new single mass flywheel?

If new what part number or what type of car do I say I want one for?

TIA
Rob

I've heard that the single mass Fidanza flywheel is pretty good. Aluminum and weighs in at 12-15 lbs. I think WRP may be having a sale of them going for $360.

Also need to make sure that you use a sprung clutch with a single mass conversion.

Aluminum will give ya lots of noise in nuetral. Why not consider a steel single? BTW, what kinda duty will the car see? Any 1/4mile launches?
congrats on "finding" that conversion! sweet!
make sure the new flywheel is balanced to the same way the old one is before installing.

If it's a single mass flywheel, why can't it be resurfaced? Is it THAT bad? It's the stock dual mass flywheel that's not "suppose" to be resurfaced even though I know some that have done it.

If it is a single, then just have it turned. Doesn't make sense that it is unusable unless it is warped or it has been turned too many times already. Realize that a Camaro single mass flywheel needs to have .090-.120 machined off before it will work in your Vette.

If you are doing this to an LT1, you need to look into the engine's rotating assembly balancing method. I believe all C4 LT1's are externally balanced. This means there are weights on the flywheel that maintain the engines balance.

Most, if not all, of the single mass flywheels are neutral balanced and are designed for internally balanced engines.

Putting a neutral balance FW on an external balance rotating assembly can lead to serious engine vibrations at certain RPM. You will be very unhappy if this happens to you.

You really need to search the archives or talk to someone like Chris from Speed Deamon motor sports.

BTW I sucessfully cut my dual mass. But it just needed a little clean up .006 inch.

Actually when I was checking for flywheels, I found the reverse to be true. Most of the ones MADE for the LT-1 are balanced. You have to take the weight off if you've rebuilt the motor and it's internally balanced. It is a valid point that needs to be taken into consideration though. :yesnod:

Cool, I stand corrected. Someone on the forum not to long ago had the problem I thought with a Camero FW. I guess I made the assumption the camero's were internally balanced LT1's. Maybe he removed the weight or didn't align it correctly.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Jay
