Best distributer for modified 85..?
So I just sold my 85's L98 and I'm almost ready to swap in my new Vortec
I'm still using my 85's harness and ECU but need a new distributer since the old one is sold with the L98. I don't want to buy a $500.00 unit when the $150.00 one would be good enough. Any recommendations?
It's a bored over .60 350ci with an Edelbrock Pro Flo, Vortec heads, CC 1.5 roller tip rockers, CC 262/270 cam, Scat rotating assembly, running 10:1 compression. I suspect 300hp at the wheels so nothing extreme.
Help is always appreciated.

My prior '88 was building ~300chp and shifting at ~5,800rpm so I wanted plenty of spark in the hole and chose HyperTech coil/cap/rotor: link
This allowed me to open the gap to .045" on my stock cut-back plugs.

I figure I have around 340 hp at the wheels and Im using a DUI distributor in my 383.. To be perfectly honest the only reason I bought the DUI is because my old distributor had a lot of miles on it and when I put in the 383 I wanted all new parts...The DUI uses a stock Delco Remy body but they put in there higher output coil and ignition control module...It's a nice unit for the money...Really the stock distributor would be fine for what you have , the stock units put out plenty of power for your car and it would work just fine.......WW

It's strange that you would say something like this , because when I installed the DUI distributor my knock counts increased, I replaced there coil with a stock type coil and the knock counts lowered.. I just left the stock coil in and never messed with it to find out why this happened..I completely forgot about the incident until your post sparked my memory........WW

Craig, Jim mentioned the same deal running a stock distributor with his at-the-time 450. I need to pick one up. I was planning to pick one up for cheap on here and do a basic refresh.

I forgot to mention that I've had two DUI coils fail. They never go bad when you're close to home.

The standard distributor will be fine, i have never had a problem with the distributor in my 85, it has no problem with my supercharged 383 engine and you can easily make adjustments to suit highly modified engines with TunerPro and a Moates ostrich emulator on the fly no need to remove chips.

I keep an emergency bag of parts in the locker behind my seat, some of the things I carry are an extra "Coil", "ICM", and more recently a "Vats bypass module", ..These 3 parts can save your butt if your away from home and disaster strikes.... ......Last year I saved another C4 owners azz at a car show by having the extra ICM in my car , I gave it to him for what I payed and replaced it immediatly when I got home.....WW
