Default TIRES: In search of Great performing, quiet, cheap....Tires.... ??

I just bought my first Corvette. It's a hot little red 93 coupe, and it's, no I'm ready for some great tires. I know truck tires, but don't know cap about performance tires. Like everyone I imagine, I want them to ride great, handle well, last long and not cost much! Anyone's histories, stories, or plain old recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi

I can highly recommend the Nexen N3000 tires, i have them on my car 275 40 17 all round and they are fantastic.
Great grip in the wet or dry better than tires worth twice as much, a well ballanced tire that is quiet also.

Wow, there must be something to them! I see a lot of people on here talking about them and all loving them. And they seem to be very reasonably priced! Any idea how long they last with basically average (well for a vette) driving?

wow, there must be something to them because I see an awful lot of people raving about them on this forum. They also seem to be very reasonably priced! I wonder if you or anyone else knows how long they last? With average driving, well for a Corvette anyway, how many miles can you get out of a set?

The '93 was the first year of the "staggered" wheel widths on the base Corvette. You need to check the wheels on your car and then decide what you need/want for tires. There's a tire placard on the drivers door with "as built" tire sizes. What sizes are on it presently?

There's way more to it other than just branding and price. While checking the tire sizes on your present tires you might want to check the tire production dates. It sounds as if your interested NOW but after checking production dates you may be more concerned with "NOW"!

Here's a DOT explanation from Tire Rack. There are others that are more definitive but Tire Rack is a supporting vendor:

Enjoy your Corvette!

I had NEXEN and switched to Nitto 555's. I got about 25,000 miles out of the NEXENs. I had issues with them pulling on uneven surfaces and getting flat spots that caused vibration and this was on a daily driver.

The Nittos so far track very well and are quiet.

The other thing to consider is speed rating. The Nittos are 98W with a speed rating of 186 MPH. I believe the NEXENs are rated at 149 MPH.

Continental DWS and DW Extreme contacts. Either one's been a great tire for me.

Nitto NT 555's will not get you high performance if you auto x, they do last long though. I have had them on for over 20k miles and they still have about 5k-10k miles left in them. I've read that the Nitto NT05's (200 Treadwear) last about 10k miles. You can get them for under $600 for 4, if you shop around. If you can find a tire around 250 treadwear I bet they would last 15k miles and get you better performance than the NT555.

Great idea. I'd bet the Coopers that are on it are old as hell! The guy I got the car from only put 6k in 6 years! God they're horrible

These are great tires. The DW's are known to be amazing rain tires as well.

But if you're only going to be driving your vette in the summer and less than 10,000 miles a year.... why not go with something a little sticky? Take a look at Nitto NT05s, 200 treadwear, will last 10-15k miles, but they STICK.

I use these also and think they are a great deal. The DWS are Dry, Wet, Snow tires and are slightly noisy. The DW are Dry, Wet tires and are the least noisy tire I've had on any of my vets. They also out stick (Extreme Contact) any tire I've run so far. They work better in the rain then my Run Flats did in the dry. They were less then $680.00 a complete set so you could by two sets for the cost of one of the other brand run flats.

Sears has Riken Raptors for a great price.
I got 4 tires out the door with mounting and balancing for $380
So far they've been great!

Lets see "in search of great performing, quite, cheap tires".
Great and cheap usually don't fit in the same description. Good and reasonable will most likely suit you better in the long run. I think the best place to start is to define your wants and needs. Take into consideration your driving style and climate. Read the reviews on Tire Rack. I have to agree with the Nitto and Conti suggestions. Both companies offer several "types" of tires to fit our Corvette. Pick something that fits your needs.

I agree with the Continental Extreme Contact DWS's!!!...

They are Extremely Quiet and stick very well!...The wear ratings are very high and they're not to expensive, considering the mileage you will get out of them.

I'm happy with my Nitto 555's. Handle reasonably well, quiet, good price, and they look good too. I never drive in the rain, so can't speak to traction in the wet.

Any cheap tire will have a drawback somewhere

Love the Contis they are a great all around tire
Getting rid of the sportsman skinnies on mine and getting a set of Contis. Flat spotting is annoying as hell.

I had Firestone Indy wide ovals and loved them. Unfortunately they discontinued the 275/40/17 so I got Bridgestones that were supposed to be more sticky but they break loose every now and then unless they are hot. They look good though

I needed a 315 for my rear tires (17x11" wheel): Vredstein Sessanta. Not too many miles on them yet but so far I'm a happy customer.

Excuse the mud, it was an end-o-season pix.
