85 antenna mast quickfix free
Hey I just wanted to share my quickfix free method of fixing the antenna mast if the motor keeps running due to the mast breaking.
If the mast breaks right above the copper hook as mine did this fix is for you. You will loose a little(1 in) travel. I was determined not to spend money. This is for 85.
Take out antenna per instructions on the forum I had to remove my tail
lights to get a good grip on the plastic housing and bezel screw.
Take apart the antenna mine has screws and clips.
Separate the mast from the motor(leave the motor alone).
Take out gear and remove metal hook. Cut excess nylon cord at the hook and place hook on paper. Trace the curve of the hook for later.
Straighten hook at least 1/2 inch at the entry end(not the hook side).
Drill the nylon out with a 1/32 drill bit holding it with vise grips or something and then file the remaining mast cord nice and round.
Place the end of the cord into the hook and crimp it like it was.
Bend the hook as close as possible to the traced curve, It must be bent exact so it can freely move in and out or it will break again.
I greased the cord slid it up and down then wipe cord off and it has worked perfectly quiet for a year.
Hook the hook and wrap the cord into the gear. Place the gear back greasing the areas required, close it up and reinstall. I found a pdf for an 86 I used.
Good luck

Well I had to fiqure something out sameday I did not see any way the cord could be separated form the mast on the 85. The mast I saw online was 80.00. I could not leave it apart waiting for a shipment. It would of taken a week. Please share where you can find the replacement for 20 in case it happens again.

Some vendors sell the whole mast -- the metal tube and the telescoping sections for somewhere in the $80 area.
You can buy just the nylon cord part for less than $20 if you do some online shopping.
