Go ahead and plan on a tranny while you're coming up with a budget. Are you looking for that hp at the crank or the wheels?

And probably the rear-end too. D36 isn't known for lasting well with 450rwhp.

Don't tell me that My fingers are crossed!

I would suggest getting a good set of headers, and all the free mods like cutting the airlid, etc. Also plan on injectors and a quality tune. You should also consider having a good port job with oversize valves to your existing heads and intake. I got the Edelbrock intake and kind of feel it was a waste. It's an adventure building up these engines. I'm currently in the process of getting mine put together round 2. I'm also rebuilding my A4 with a pro-built kit. That reminds me go get yourself a good torque converter. I got a Vig 3600. Call up Dana at Probuilt and get his opinion for your goals.

You won't ever get 450 RWHP out of an LT1 with these kind of mods. Maybe you could reach 375 crank HP, but to reach higher levels you'll probably need a stroker rebuild.

When I rebuilt my 92 LT1 into a 383, I also had the transmission rebuilt to factory new specs. Big mistake - the factory tranny was good for the 300 HP LT1, but not a stroker engine. It lasted about one month. YMMV. Good luck, and keep us posted.

With the mods that you are thinking...

I'd get comfortable with 350 rwhp.

Takes a $10,000 budget to see 450 REAL rwhp...
then the tranny, rear end, joints, drive shafts..etc...

jk

Besides think of it this way. You want a 150 hp increase. Your car is old, and I promise you it's not cranking out 300 hp right now. It is pretty tough to see 450 hp N/A from an LT1, however a good set of heads goes a long way.

I remember when I started modding my Vette, I found a hot cam kit on craigslist. Pretty much didn't use any of it, and went with a head port, a CC503, and another grand or so in mods. Then I blew a ring a couple months later. 383 now. Still piecing it together, but it's gonna be strong. Sadly the transmission comment above is true as well. You will need a rebuild. A good one. The street/strip kit from Probuilt is what I'm using. Good for 580 hp, and that's not happening so I'll be good (as long as I actually build this thing correctly

A 350 rwhp LT1 can be a reliable strong runner. With 355 rwhp my 94 M6 was trapping 117 mph.

A good set of ported heads, Comp 503 camshaft, 1.6 roller rockers, and tune should get you ~350 rwhp.

reality sure sucks, doesn't it?

Heck, if 450 were that easy, even I'd have it !

best I ever built was in the neighborhood of 400...and EVERY damn thing that HAD to be done to meet smog chiseled away at that number till I was just over 300...but I had a valid smog cert !

Oh, I "get" that and used to have a mail box etc "home" as well. Everything was at that street address...even the CDL. Folks in Az used to be able to get a box in one county while living in another to beat the smog police...A simple matter of zip codes.

Just this past summer I got busted for that stuff and spent several $thou to buy my way back into the good graces of the local sheriff and the state in which I was actually residing....

To be brief, don't get caught with fraudulent docs on residence, registrations etc. They get real PI$$ED about that stuff !~ trust me...
