89 Coupe not cranking when hot NOT VATS
FSM purchased but not in my hands yet.
Just picked up the car this week. I put resistors in the VATS circuit as it would have trouble starting w/ the security light blinking. So I thought, wow I fixed it.
So I drive it down to the parts house after letting it warm up, go in get what I need and come out and it will not crank. No noise no clicking no nothing. This is the second time this has happened to me with this car.
My assumption is that the starter solenoid is being effected by heat so replacing the starter is what I was thinking to do.
I would like some ideas on if I am barking up the right tree.
I have done no other diagnostics on this issue.
Is there a relay that would be better to check/replace first?

Sometimes you have to disable the starter enable relay too .http://www.vatssucks.com/ It could also be that your starter is overheating inside.

Your '89 likely has the 'Denso starter and the solenoid contacts, a clean, maybe some brushes and a couple other miscellaneous internal parts should likely cure it's problems. If it's an original starter I wouldn't do an "off-the-shelf" reman replacement but just do the parts required OR if there's a quality starter/alternator shop in the area have them do the parts for you.
You can buy the required parts kit for cheap from several vendors but a local buy might be the least expensive as long as you know what to ask for.
You of course need to check the conditions of the cables and wiring also. Lot's to check.
