Default knock sensor removal

Hello everyone,

I have been carefully trying for days to remove the knock sensor on my '87. I'm trying not to break it. I have searched, looked in the manuals, and even taken Richard newton's advice in his book 101 Projects. I've purchased a 23mm socket, tried a 7/8" socket and wrench, but to no avail. There is limited room for removal.

Bottom line question.....What's the worse that can happen if I pull the heads without draining all of the coolant? I'm pretty sure the pistons are going to get wet. Thanks in advance.

Tried spraying PB Blaster? The knock sensors come with anti-seize
applied to the threads, but your sensor may be the original.

There is a 7/8 socket used for O2 sensors that allows for an extension bar
to be used which may provide enough 'swing' room to remove the knock sensor:

Put a hose on a turkey baster, and problem solved. Just make sure and tell the boss you stole it. Got me in trouble more than once.

Put a vacuum hose on a turkey baster and suck the coolant out. Leave knock sensor in place. Do this after the heads have come off through the waterjackets.

If I could only pull the heads off without pulling the knock sensor and the plug on the driver's side resulting in coolant getting into the cylinders when you start lifting the heads. Then my vote would go to the wet/dry shop vacuum.

Thanks John, I can see the threads on the sensor and they look corroded that's why I'm happy to try to leave it alone.I've been PB Blasting the plug on the drivers side and so far it won't budge.
