C4 Tech/Performance L98 Corvette and LT1 Corvette Technical Info, Internal Engine, External Engine

Anybody throw a Muncie M20 or M21 in a C4???

Default Anybody throw a Muncie M20 or M21 in a C4???

Ok, so I found a featured car in "Chevy High Performance" magazine that caught my attention. A 65 C2 with an early iron head L98, built with a mini-ram and basically... the works. I know it's an L98 from the distributer, and C4 logo valve covers (lacking centerbolts) meaning iron heads. Anyways, what got my attention was that they mated a Muncie M21 to the L98.... is this possible??? Haven't found a single article about it for 10 minutes so decided to ask my favorite forum.... slightly beating "Calguns"

I'd love to ask the owners myself because the article states that they built the engine and autocross it in the Bay Area... but I doubt they'd find this.

Very possible as the l98 shares the same bellhousing bolt pattern as all 1st gen sbc's. The issue you will run into will be mounting the c beam to the muncie. It can be done but you need to be at least a bit of a fabricator. This would only be a problem trying to put a muncie or other into a c4.

Rich B. did a similar swap only difference is he used a T10 instead of a Muncie.

c-beam is a major issue along with why??

the Muncie's were nice back then, but not now....not nearly as tough (other than maybe the M22 Rock Crusher and even those had weak points) as the ZF or other modern manuals with 5 or 6 gears, so...........

if you have to modify a manual transmission to put into a C4, I would not choose yesterday's technology.....

I've been told that the M21s were pretty strong and handled lots of power. I'm not leaning towards it because, as many have said, the ZF6 and other options are a lot better, but also a lot more expensive.

All 21’s are not created equal . The ones built in the late 60’s early 70’s with the 1” cluster shaft are the best. The later ones also have a fine spline input shaft and a th400 size output shaft.

and yes...they are durable

Seems funny talking about this stuff in the c4 section

better suited to the c3 section.

Except that very few C3 owners would have much experience putting one in a C4 chassis.

That is what the OP was asking about....not facts about the trans itself.

My first post in this thread covered the installation of a Muncie 4 speed in a C4. Later the durability of the Muncie was questioned. I covered that too. OP was covered and facts about the Muncie where secondary.

Ive broken every Munice Ive ever owned except 1 and it only had an LT1 in front of it rest were big blocks. If its sound internally make sure the bushings and shift linkage are "just right" and youll probably be Ok unless youre launching it hard on a sticky tire
The SB one got abused bad and held up.
