How to Remove the Starter Motor
My '86 still has the pre-cats (but not for long!) and I was wondering if you guys knew any tricks to getting the starter motor out.

Put the car securely on jack stands. Remove BOTH battery cables. Get in right behind the passenger side front tire. Remove the wires and tie strap them out of the way or they may get hooked and broken. Remove the long bolt loosen the shorter bolt and remove the small nut off the back of the starter. It is a small hook type deal to help you line it up properly. Take the small nut off the new starter or it won't line up proper and hook the screw in the holder on the back and start your screws. The starter should come off near the fuel filter area. I just did this on a 85 but I think it is the same.

If its an automatic, you have to squeeze it past the trans cooling lines. Its tight but you can do it. The book says to remove the lines but Ive done it 4 times without it. Now I have a small starter so its no problem.

I've got the 4+3, it was a huge PITA, but I managed to get it out. I'm going to throw the new one in tomorrow. Too tired to try and wrestle that **** back in tonight.

Whatever you do disconnect the battery first.
