Default Steering rack replacement: autozone/ o'reilys?

Seen a couple of topics about these replacements and I'm tired of seeing the paperweight rack leaning against the wall in the garage. O'reilys carries replacement racks with the core charge of the original. Did a little reading and I think I would favor the quicker ratio rack. This was a non Z51 car, from those who have went the autozone/parts store route, do they carry multiple ratio racks or is it the standard replacement rack?

I looked into Turn One.....1985 is one of those few magical years that requires a bore/resleeving of the rack along with the rebuild, lucky me. I hear The $140 racks aren't too bad and come with lifetime warranty. Gotta love money pits, if you throw enough money into them, they eventually fill up.

my 2 cents the autozone dura last parts are horrible. If you have a local Napa store id get it there. If your rack is stock id see about seeing if a shop can rebuild it for you.

While true that Turn One is probably going to cost more, they do an excellent job (they did on my 84) and I think it's worth the extra coin. It's not that easy a job to have to do more often than necessary.

Had a conversation with someone at Turn One and they were very helpful. Normally the rebuild, including the core, comes in at around $200. Unfortunately, I believe 1984 and 1985 racks require what's known as a resleeve. I don't know the details but I was told to expect around $500 out the door. You mentioned your 84, I'm assuming they did that to your rack? Gotta pay to play but hate these one-year-only parts.

I just had the rack from my 85 done by Turn One. They had to bore and sleeve the housing. The cost was $403 and that included shipping to me. I had to ship the rack to them. The steering feels like a new car.

Another vote for Turn One. Sounds like they are the go to guys, at least I know it will be a quality rebuild. When you sent the rack in and if it was a standard rack, could you specify it to be rebuilt to Z51 specs?

I changed mine last year thru Ecklers... went threw 3 of them since they were all junk. Contacted Turn One. He charged my a rebuild price and had it back shortly after sending it to them. Haven't had any problems since.. well worth a few extra bucks!

Mine was a Z51 so I didn't ask. They used my internals in a different housing. They keep bored and sleeved housings on hand to reduce the waiting time. I suspect the Z51 uses different gears. I would think rebuilders would require a core of the same type.

when I had my 84 I bought a Z51 rack from O'reillys. Worked fine and I gave them the non-z51 rack as a core - they couldn't care less. Almost 3 years since I did that and the guy who bought the car is still driving it that way.
