Default OBX LT1 headers on L98

Hi,

I have been looking at that big auktion site for OBX SS headers for the L98 corvette but can't find any other than the ones for LT1-4 corvette.

Would these fit on my 1987? I will be changing the stock exhaust for true duals and I have not need for keeping the EGR, cats or other smog equipment...

Those are sweet looking! I'm in the market for headers too for my 85's L98 and was told the LT1 shorty headers are a big improvement over the stock ones. If the LT1 shorty headers will work on an L98, I don't see why thes ones won't. Maybe they'll have clearance issues? I think there will probably need to be some modifications to make them work, but I don't think it would be major. Then again, I've never tried.

The D port style LT1 exhaust manifolds and headers will partially block the squarish ports on the 85 iron heads. It will run fine, but I do not see how this could not effect performance negatively. The ones shown in the picture appear to have round ports....so I dunno.....

OBX makes headers for the L98. Why not just buy those.

Yes, but I can't find anywhere they are listed for sale. Maybe I'm looking the wrong places?

I haven't seen many for the L98 other than the long tube ones they have at Summit.

I've sent two e-mails to these folks asking about the cat-back exhaust for my '89. They aren't real good at responding to questions via e-mail. Just an FYI

They were pretty quick in my case. The answer I got from racingpartsdepot today is that the OBX SS headers for L98 are out of stock for the next 8 weeks.

Fleabay usually has em.
That's where I got mine, and the full x pipe system.

If you're going to keep all the smog stuff working, then you'll have a fair amount of work to do. I went through that recently when I converted my 91 L-98 to use LT-1 manifolds. Search for post by me for more details.

Thanks, I have looked at your website and old posts.

I'll be removing all smog which also include the fittings at the headers for a cleaner look.

I'm going to wait the 8 weeks and see if the L98 OBX headers is available again.

But theoretical, would there be any problems in using the LTx OBX headers on a L98 (1987) if I'll remove all the smog stuff and if I'll be using a custom exhaust from headers and backwards. The OBX LTx headers are not D-shaped at the ports as I understand.

The bolt pattern is the same or?

I used my l98 headers on fastburn heads which use lt1 d port gaskets. I had to slot the bolt holes to raise them up and do some grinding and welding to port match. Would never had done it if I didn't have a welder/fabricator on staff here.

Personally I think the LTX header is better for removing the smog stuff because a single plug will cap off the AIR port in the header.... Looks very clean.

The L98 headers have individual AIR ports on every tube and the AIR manifold on top connecting all of them. Looks like crap with all that stuff uncapped on top of the primary tubes.

The bolt pattern on the cyl heads is the same so they interchange no problem there....

You could buy the LTX headers and their LTX system and easily convert your L98 car to the LTX dual exhaust which would help out performance a bunch over the Y Pipe and single exhaust....

The bolt pattern is the same.

When I (visually) compared LTx vs 113 L98 alum heads a couple years back, I noticed the exhaust ports sit higher on LT heads. (By that, I mean with respect to the mounting bolts). I didn't measure but would estimate the difference only 1/8".

I'm sure they'd bolt up...the question is whether they'd completely cover the lower part of the exhaust port. (Because the bottom of the port isn't rounded, it's probably the bottom two "corners" that would be in question. But, the bottom isn't quite as important for exhaust flow.

I'm guessing they'd work without issue.

I've been looking at the OBX's for a little while now too. I have an 85, but will be changing my heads to the 113 aluminum castings from a 90 vette. These should have the D-ports. I will be/have already removed the EGR and AIR from my car, so those smog fittings are not an issue, other than I would like a set of headers without those attachments for a cleaner look.

And I think this is what the OP wants too. So the bottom line question should be does anyone know for sure if the LT1 headers work with the L98/113 combo? If they do I may go this route myself.
