Default Power antenna problem

My '88 has a power antenna. I removed the mast & there is only about 4 inches of the geared nylon 'leader' left on it, so I'm guessing the rest is still wound up in the motor. What is the easiest/best/cheapest way to get the rest of the geared nylon out of the motor? I tried turning the radio on while someone else was holding the motor to see if any would come out, so I could grab onto it, but I couldn't see anything. The motor ran, but nothing showed up. It must still be in there, right? The motor still works fine, so I hate to buy a new one.

This link gives a fairly complete set of instructions for the complete job but includes a bit about removing pieces broken inside..
