I have listed this in the general section with no results so maybe this is a technical question. My 84 has the Z51 option which is suppose to have and engine oil cooler. Can anyone tell me where the lines are located and the cooling unit itself? I find no information in my FSM.

Oil filter screws onto the oil cooler. You should see two hoses going into it, one short from the block and one which runs under the pan then into a "T". I am assuming the 84 is the same as my 85.

If someone wants to take that to the next level, you have to buy another sandwich adaptor that fits on the cooler, then you can run oil lines to a heat exchanger somewhere in the air stream...which is the hard part. I used nose space for a trans cooler in front of the a/c condensor.
If you stuff TOO much heat up there you just add it back to the engine making it impossible to cool the radiator with all these other heat sources blowing and discharging their heat.
I was looking at some space in the nose corners where marker lights are, or flat on the floor of the headlite well area. Possibly where the washer bottle lives...
A vent would have to be cut in the floor for fresh air to enter and pass thru the oil cooler. It couldn't be more than6 x 8" at best, but ANY would be able to help elimimate heat build up in the engine oil.
I used to have the tranny cooler in the rear hanging down where the spare carrier used to live but the flow of oil was poor going that long distance thru 3/8 tubing...so the cooling was minimal. Its much better up front but its getting crowded in the nose. Just cannot stuff too many hot things in one place or you defeat the purpose of them ALL.

One other option is to find the right space on the hood underside, mount cooler 1" off the hood and run lines up the nose/hinge to the cooler. Use a 6" computer fan to draw air thru the cooler. I've seen the hood cut for fresh air with a nice grate to make the hole acceptable and finished on the outside.
There is just so very little space for these things that they have to be well thought out. For someone that was willing to toss the a/c condensor, thats like getting an acre for parking....lots of room for new things. You can then stick the oil cooler in the nose to catch max fresh air.

I have an 84 with the Z51. The oil coolers didn't come out until the 85 Vettes unless it was later in the year or someone added it to the op's car.

An added word of caution on the oil cooler, they can fill with gunk and spread crap through-out the engine. I checked my on my last rebuild, found that it was full of crap and removed it altogether..

You're supposed to run an oil filter, not just the cooler. lol

How can they fill with gunk? That seems like a filter issue. Oil coolers are a good idea, although not really necessary in a street car.

I remember inquiring about this when I got the car because I was under the same impression. Z51 included an oil cooler except mine was not built that way.I finally got my oil cooler when I bought the LT5.

84 only has " when fitted "
a separate reg style standalone oil cooler mounted upfront with steel / rubber lines along drv side of engine connecting the cooler to adapter on the block.

Had one car that spun a main bearing. There was definitely crap in the sandwich adapter and no way to clean it. Tossed it and oil temp dropped 50° but took longer to warm up.
