Default Rear main seal leaking.

I'm down to the last leak on this vehicle, the rear main seal.

There is a how-to on the internet about replacing a SBC 2-piece main seal without much more than removing the oil pan, oil pump and rear main cap.

Does anyone have any insight/suggestions/how-to's on performing this? Part numbers? Special tools? Tips and tricks?

Thanks,
-Scott

For starters, if you have an '89 you have a 1-piece rear main seal. Totally different than a 2-piece. Out comes the transmission and off comes the oil pan. All of the "how to" is in the Factory Service Manual and in numerous threads. No special tools are required, just normal mechanic tools.

GM went to one piece rear main seal late 86 i believe, so you will have to remove the transmission and flexplate/flywheel if its the orig 89 engine.
