Default Anyone know if a mechanical fuel pump will fit on a c4?

Anyone know if a mechanical fuel pump will fit on a c4? my car has a carburetor and I can't find a good spot for an electric Holley pump. Just don't know if it will clear the suspension.

An '84MY I believe the answer is yes as far as the engine capabilities. As to physical space available, I have no idea. You should need just a push rod, a plate and a pair of gaskets.

It's a '72 400 with a Lunati Voodoo cam in it. I might just have borrow one to see. Not many people have done what I have to this car heh.

Why not do what most do with a carb swap and use the stock in tank pump and just fit a fuel reg to drop the pressure down to suit the carb ?
No need for any new pump

The return line isn't big enough and I didn't feel like pluming a whole new line. I put in a Holley blue pump where the fuel filter was but somehow the motor part was filled with water. I guess I could get another one and shield it from moisture.

Not recommended .
Elec fuel pumps are pushers ; should be located as close as poss to the tank

Doesn't it depend if the cam has the extra lobe to run the pump?

I believe up to and including 86..all the blocks are the same and stands to reason cams would have the lobe...thats a darn good point by the way.

The OP mentions in post #3 that it's NOT an '84MY engine. The question was deceptive but yes an '84MY camshaft has the fuel pump drive lobe.

My early '86 has a plate bolted to the area where the fuel pump used to be. There are some brackets there that hold the fuel lines.

The question I would have is: is there physically enough room to mount a fuel pump without interference from the frame, suspension, etc.

87 and later. most blocks were not drilled to accommodate the fuel pump push rod. 89ish non existent

That sounds like the ops million dollar question.

mech pump will fit the 400 itself no problem.
Carter makes a real reliable piece. Hate electric fuel pumps unless you just have to have one

Throttle body in tank pumps are in the 14# range, TPI & up engines are in the 40# range.

If any pump is still in the tank but power is disconnected so it does not operate an outboard pump will not pull fuel through it.

Suggest a throttle body in tank pump & fuel pressure regulator. The stock bypass line to the tank should be large enough with the described system. It is large enough for 84 models with throttle bodies.

There is no need to have more than 6-7 lbs. of pressure to your carb for street and mild strip use. Like stated above, why not use the stock intank 15 lb. pump?? Why do you think that the return line is not big enough?? I have a carbed 84 and am using the stock pump and a Mallory 4309 FPR adjusted to 5.5 lbs. I have had bad luck with Holley elec. pumps and I use the old Carter 4070 elec. pump on my 65 GTO , 455 with dual 600 carbs and over 400 hp with 6 psi to the carbs with no problems. Also run the same Carter pump on my 78 Ford Ranchero with a 460, single 750 Edel carb and over 400 hp with 6 psi and no problems. You can pulll fuel through a non working intank fuel pump but it is not the best thing. I have a cheapo AC delco external elec. pump that I carry in case my intank takes a dump. It takes me less than 10 minutes to hook up at the carb so that at least I can get home or to somewhere I can replace the intank pump. I measured about 4 psi pulling through the dead pump(I have an on/off safety switch for the intank pump). There is a lot of engine heat in your C4 and those mechanical pumps can boil your fuel so I say keep the intank 15 psi unit or replace it with a 6 psi intank from a carbed vehicle. If you are set on an electric external pump then remove the intank and mount the external pump in back.

I used a fuel pump off a 79 Vette to Fit right to the block. I spliced the return line and the fuel in line tube together and took out the pump from the tank and replaced it with a piece of tube the same length as the original pump. I place the strainer sock at the end of the tube works great.
