Default Replace Water pump and opti

1996 CE LTI. Had dealer replace water pump (ac delco) and opti today, took car out and it is running very hot compared to brfore. Before it ran right on the mark above the 185 on temp. guage (210) and now it is between the last mark and 265.(240) Taking it back tomorrow but would like to know what you guys think.

Thanks

Bad stat or air in the system.. never the less the stealership needs to correct that mess.. before you destroy your engine... The LT parts are way over priced as it is...

They have to burp the coolant system to get all of the air out!

Back to dealer today to get system burbed after burbing same problem with overheating. Mechinic suggested changing thermostat. Changed it and took out for a run. Temp now at 210 and all seems good. Thanks for the ideas.

Default thermostats don't just fail for no reason

Hi betyelou,

suggest keeping a close eye on the car and assure you have documentation of the post work (burping, thermostat replacement) as chances are the 'mechanic' overheated the engine/thermostat and 'toasted it', hence why replacing it 'fixed it'.

That means you could develop water/oil/compression (head gasket) leaks if the overheat was really bad (it's a shame our cars don't have a memory on the temp gauge so we could tell)...

Also as a precaution, suggest having the oil and filter changed asap and check for water therein and then keep an eye on it till next change for water (foam) or level increase.

I cannot believe any mechanic wouldn't test drive the car, or at least idle it up to the fans engaging. I bet they had no problem cashing your check.
210* is too hot at cruise. The cooling system has been compromised and could have realy done some damage at 265*. That 's head warping temp. AC Delco waterpumps are just boxed generics these days. I had a bad new one with a leaking seal.

It's disheartening to pay dealer prices and get a problem handed to you. I think you should insist on a bona fide LT-1 180* thermostat installed right side up this time. If it cruised at 190* previously you need a lawyer.
