steering column diagram
I have troubles! Took apart my steering column to tighten the 4 screws at the base of the tilt housing and now I have forgotten what goes where. i have scoured looking for an exploded column diagram and can't find one (links are dead, etc). Can someone shoot me one, or post on my thread? Thanks

that's a good writeup, and i found others, but none show an "exploded parts diagram" that I can make out. I have a little "wavy washer" that I don't know where to insert. Also, any hints on putting the dimmer actuator back in place - it's a mystery to me so far?

If you have a GM car with column shift, then yes, its those 4 screws that loosen up.
The console or manual shift cars have pivot pins in the housings that wear out. Actually its not the pivot pin that wears out, its the forged aluminum housing that wears out around the hardened steel pivot pins.
Look at your pivot pins. Are they falling out? If so, you need to replace your housings.
Heres another issue:
Tom Reina at corvette steering bought up all the GM steering column housings.
However, he died in January 2012 (RIP).
He got me the parts, and talked me through doing this in December 2011.
Im not sure who has taken over his business 'corvette steering', but you might want to inquire on this.
Good luck.

yes, you are correct, the housing must be worn some. i did tighten the 4 bolts about 2 turns however and it did make a difference.
it was a real pita I must say. I found this link that was a lot of help as well

I will no longer be using the steering wheel to hoist myself out though, I have learned my lesson.
Thanks again.

I recently had the steering column aluminum housing "support" piece replace at Tony's Corvette in Gaithersburg, MD.
They have access to parts. You could trying calling about the part itself, which was quite pricey for me to replace... $300ish if I remember correctly.

I regret to inform you, if you are trying to fix a loose column, the problem is most likely not those 4 screws.
