Shifter Cables: the Good, Bad and Really Ugly
The boot on the bottom end of my 700r4 shifter cable came apart so I decided to replace it. Years ago you could buy just the boot, but the stock on these guys ran out. There are no original shifter cables left either (part number 10219967). The same part number is used on all automatic transmission Corvettes from 1984 through 1996.
I did a search on the part number and came up with Dorman 16674 as the replacement. Everywhere I looked showed "out of stock" or "no longer available". The Dorman web site doesn't even recognize that number.
I finally found a 16674 listed on the Advance Auto Parts web site and I ordered one. When it arrived I was surprised that it came in an ATP (Automatic Transmission Parts) box. There was a sticker that said 16674 even though you will find Y-747 if you do a search on the ATP web site. Apparently ATP bought the line from Dorman (my guess).
I installed the new cable in my car and found that I couldn't shift into Park or Reverse. The rod on the shifter end of the cable was about 1" too long and bottomed out in the ferrule. That was only the beginning of the problems with this cable.
I contacted ATP and explained the situation. They didn't seem to think there was a problem, so I very thoroughly documented the problems I had and what I did to fix them. I put all that on a web page here:
http://www.misterpeachy.com/VetteStu...674_Cable.html
I emailed the above link to ATP. They never responded.
While doing more research on this I found that Pioneer makes a shifter cable that fits C4 Corvettes, part number CA-1162. Looking at the pictures, it looked like it had the correct dimensions so I ordered one from AutoZone. It fits perfectly and now I don't have a kluged shifter cable setup.
Bottom line: Avoid Dorman/ATP 16674 and ATP Y-747. Buy a Pioneer CA-1162.

Thanks Cliff, filed this away for future reference. So many parts are now discontinued for our cars this will become more and more of an issue going forward, much of the aftermarket stuff fits poorly.

Shift cable
I just put that cable y-747 in my 96 and it fit fine. It matched up with teh original just fine. The only differance I could see was the cable casing was not as thick.

I wonder if the cable was different between 86 and 96.

bought my cable used, boot was oily and tattered, I ripped the boot out, it trapped grease and sand, that would wear the sliders, it's just like the B and M cables no boot to hold sandpaper, each time I am under there I give is a good wipe, shifts fine... that boot is asking for trouble
how much did you pay for that cross-fit item?

In a newer thread there is a pic of a 1990 shifter base were this cable was too long. My shifter mounting base is compleatly diffrent from the 1990 one. So something may have changed along the way.

The parts book lists the same cable part number for '84 through '96, so the details might have changed over the years but the cable was the same.
