Default drilled & slotted rotors - good/bad?

I'm going to do my J55 upgrade soon and I'm looking at rotors. Any feedback on the drilled & slotted ones failing? I've seem threads elsewhere on failures so I'm wondering if the thicker and larger 13" rotors do the same thing or if it's just dependent on driving style/race use/etc.

Still trying to figure out pads too. Recently I haven't been too impressed with pads for a daily driver. I don't want race pads like I had on the C5. It stopped amazingly but they sucked when cold and made a LOT of noise. Ceramic pads seem to take 3-4K miles before they stop decent and even at that aren't very good. Maybe it's time to go back to regular old metallic linings?

Drilled and slotted rotot are bling and work fine on the street. You will notice zero difference between them and the $40 Napa rotors.

For pad, Carbotech makes good street pads that clean up easily. They also make excellent track pads.

Drilled rotors WILL crack under hi-temp, few fast laps around the track is enough to destroy them.

Depending on your driving, I would suggest Hawk HPS or HP plus. I'm running HP plus on my daily driver cos it gets a lot of track time

For a quality street pad take a look at the Carbotech 1521 compound.

The Carbotech™ 1521™ is our high performance street compound. The 1521™ compound is known for its release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. 1521™ is also a very low dusting and low noise compound with an excellent initial bite. This compound's excellent linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Carbotech™ 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 800°F (426°C+). 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle or fleet vehicle. Carbotech™ 1521™ is NOT recommended for ANY track use.

They are $84 each at Napa for the 13" rotors. Not like the C5 rotors that you can buy for dirt cheap. Summit has the drilled/slotted ones for $55 which is why I was asking.

They're fine for the street(unless you drive pretty aggressively). If you track your car I would advise against them.

Checkout Corvette Recycling for NOS J55 (13 inch) front and 12" rear rotors. I bought a front and rear set from them and they are just as advertised, high quality, new old stock @ $79.99 for a set of four. They work great on my '96 and I do occasionally track the car.

One of the vendors (Brakemotive) here has a special pricing on drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic pads. For the J55 all four rotors and pads are $205 shipped. The link to that thread is below.

Everything I have read is that for racing, the drilled rotors tend to crack sooner, but it also seems like all rotors crack when racing. I suspect you might try searching in the autocross section for more info. For a street car I don't know if that still applies.

This special is also on the C5 parts (on another thread) and there are a lot of good reviews of the Brakemotive parts (about 40 pages on the C5 thread). (17 pages on the C4 thread)

At this price, (C5's are only $180) I decided to give them a try and ordered a set yesterday.

Good luck with your choice.

Napa stores are franchised, it depends where you buy from. The point is that you can buy cheap regular rotors (RockAuto is a good online source) and they will work just fine. A drilled/slotted rotor for $55...that ought to tell you something. None the less, for puttering around on the street they'll be fine.

I already did the rears so I only need the fronts. I'll check with them though to see what it would be for just the fronts.
