I know there are lots of threads on this subject, but I just wanted to say thanks to Corvette Forum, and those guys who have provided me with the knowledge to do this.......



The clear coat had started to peel off. It looked awful, so I did exactly what others had done here; 600 wetordry, then 1000, then 1500. Then rubbing compound, polishing paste, and finally wax, using my random orbital. Awesome result!

I did this too mine, big difference, but DO NOT REAPPLY any coating. The coating peeled off in the first place. Raw acrylic is polish-able so any blemish can be polished, just keep it waxed like the paint.

I just left it waxed. I agree, clear coat will just come off again! It's actually even better than the photos.

I redid mine using the same method but i do apply clearcoat from a can and it came out very nice since the clearcoat was off and it was scratched all over... So i think that both ways will work depending on damage at beginning...

Your top really does look nice! The acrylic top on my '84 has never looked as bad as yours did, but I give mine a Mothers Clay Bar treatment occasionally. Does an amazing job of keeping it clean and smooth. Doesn't dull the shine at all!

Good old any brand wet and dry 600 / 1000 / 1500.
Maquires rubbing compound, followed by maquires polishing compound, using my Griots random orbital polisher. Then Griots Best of Show wax. Twice. It's like a mirror now Took 1.5 hours and probably the best bang for appearance bucks I have spent.

Wow! That looks great! I'm really glad to see this. I bought my 94 with a top that looked like that only worse in some areas, didn't realize it was a clearcoat and could be fixed so I painted it to match the car. Unfortunately, the paint weatherchecked so I still have to do something with it. This is what I really wanted in the first place. I'm gonna try it as soon as the car is running again, and, weather gets better so it can be outside, and a couple of other urgent projects get done. Definately bookmarking this!

umm i just searched for targa top and found this thread...will this method work for a c5 top as well?

If your top is acrylic I imagine it will.
