Push the old stud out, push the new stud in and tighten. Any auto parts store should have the studs.

It takes a little effort, but should just push out.

It does seem that way, but they will come out.

I've changed them out before, and as you found out it seems like they are part of the cable.
But with a little effort, you can wiggle them out and replace with new studs.

I just did one today. Grab the hex with a vicegrip, and pull while twisting. When you push in the new one, a tiny dab of grease on the inside of the rubber part of the terminal will help.

That really depends on how big the stud is.

On mine the shoulder on the new stud just would not go past the rubber like plastic. Just took a razor knife and trimmed it a little. I guess its been a year or so.

Thanks everyone, I just never did one before and had the nightmare of yanking out the cable. I'm not a mechanic but managed to change out the battery since 1986 a few times,,, so guess who probably stripped this one.. I always just like the input here of people who may have a trick or two to get it done.. and have done it before. The vicegrip sounds good and it does sound simple........ but so has been just reconnecting the damn battery the last how many times till this one,,, I've done that a few times with ease, except this time and with the battery brand new and the stud not going in, I can see its stripped.

Once again thank you all and I'll send in for my badge when I get it done LOL...

I got the badge... got it out easily with a pair of vice grips.... the problems seem to be the stud on the positive is really short.... do you get the same size or can you get one a little bigger???

Seems like a stud that is a little longer would make life a lot easier or do you risk damaging the battery?

Has anyone used a longer stud? My car is 86..

Thanks

I believe all of the positive battery bolts for a side-terminal battery are the same size. (the threaded side)

I have seen some which were a little longer on the side where you would put your wrench.

Sometimes folks install extra eyelets at that connection for radios and other such electrical items. That would make starting the bolt a little trickier.
