4:10 gears and speedo?
I have a 92 convert. with a 6 speed, and am thinking of changing to 4:10 gears and would like to hear from others who have done this. What did you think about the swap? how did you correct the speedo?

There are two schools of thought on speedo correction. One is to replace the plastic gear. That is ok if you already have the C-beam off anyway. Just make sure that you get the right gear and that you put it on the same spot on the output shaft (there are two holes where the clip fits) as the original.
The other way is you can splice in an electronic speedo correction "black box". I went with this method after replacing my plastic speedo gear for the 4th time. Four wire installation and you flip a few dip switches and you are done.

you will have to use the black box if you want your speedo to be accurate.
3.75 gear ratio are about the limit when changing the plastic speedometer drive and driven gears.
try this calculator:

It's just the right way to do it. The rear, the beam and driveshaft are already out it's pretty damned "straight forward"!
I think a 4.10 might be a "stretch" for drivability in some instances and I might consider a 3.73 or a 3.90 gear. A good bit depends I guess on the balance of the build and the intentions! A .30 0r .45 gear difference I would think make a reasonable improvement in performance. Some mention expense? None of it is "inexpensive"!

I did 4.10's in my 96 and they are a lot of fun. It's not a cheap process unless you remove/reinstall yourself. I bought a used hypertech controller for $80 off of fleabay and changed the speedo and lowered my fan temps with a few pushes of a button. The change in first gear is huge. Makes driving the car much more fun IMO. The people that complain the gears are so short you shift alot seem to forget that you don't have to shift gears in order and don't have to use 2nd, 3rd, and even fourth if you wind out 1st. I shift from 1st to 4th a lot and sometimes 1st to 5th if I draw 1st out a bit.
