Default Those who run 4.10s (Dana 44)

Hello,

For those running 4.10s-are you using the Viper gears, Richmond, or another?

Thanks,
Steve

Dana OEM 4.10's here, which are the same as the Viper gearset. They are quieter than the stock 3.45's.

I am definitely watching this thread! This is my next upgrade after the 6 speed conversion. Where did you get the 4.10's? I did Richmond 4.10's in my LT1 firebird, when I did I had to upgrade the driveshaft. Do you have to upgrade anything else when you do the gears? Second, the Richmond gears were REALLY noisy(I will never buy Richmond gears again), you said they were quieter then stock 3.45's. So I would assume OEM gear sets are the way to go?

I can tell you from first hand expierence. I did Richmond 4.10 gears in my LT1 firebird. They were REALLY noisy ! I for one will never buy them again! However, I loved the difference between the factory 3.23 and the 4.10's.

Why do you hate 4.10's? I had them in an auto Lt1 94 Trans Am and Loved them. They were just really noisy. Have you ever had Richmond 4.10's before. The reason I ask is I know 4 other people personally who had the same gears and they all complained about the noisy gears. Maybe its only the 4.10's, I have never had 3.73's so I can't comment on them. Not doubting your experience, just curious.

Oh yeah almost forgot. The reason I am going with them is I am converting my 4+3 into a 6 speed. I want the 6th gear to be usefull.

I liked them at first on my bolt on LT1 but got sick of shifting into 3rd by the time I got across an intersection from a red light. 6th gear may feel like it becomes useful but I blew a zf from overheating 6th using it for top speed runs. 6th shares a syncro with reverse and is a very very weak gear. it will turn red hot and weld itself destroying the zf. I know of 4 other cases of it happening. The ZF is actually a 5 speed 6th is a complete waste of a gear and is just for fuel economy. trying to make it useful is wrong as even with 4.10s the top speed it can attain is still rediculously high.

If you're building a 355 or smaller and are spinning 7k + or just want the best 60 ft time at the track and a shorter e.t go for 4.10s. Imo all they do is help break parts and require stickier tires making it a pathetic striaghtline car in the process.

I purchased my gears from a forum member in the ZR1 section, he worked in the parts dept. of a GM dealership. Unfortunately, he no longer sells the gear sets. But, they are the same as the Viper gears.

No other upgrades are needed for the gear swap.

It looks like the OEM type are the most popular. Without starting another thread-What half-shafts are most of you using-Stock or Steel?

Thanks Again!!
Steve

I'm running stock half-shafts and stock clutch. My car has seen ~50 runs down the 1/4 with speeds up to 119 mph, without broken parts.

Good to hear-I am going to stick with the stock DMF and clutch also as it seems to help the initial hit at the starting line.

Thanks,
Steve
