Default 12.63 at 115mph with a 2.135 60'time. In Hawaii with 396 LT-1 Vette

Ran my 93 with the 396 LT-1 for the 1st time tonight here in Hawaii. I am pleased with the results as I know there is plenty of potential, as traction was a slight problem. I had BFG drag radials, at 15#'s, 315/35 17's. They helped but the track isnt very good here, as my speed shows, the times arent very representative of what she can do. No excuses here, but I will go faster eventually, once i get some stickier tires. Still not a bad time though. Would have ran more, ran two other times, 13.0 at 114mph (1st time), 12.9 115 mph but pwer steering pump reservoir hose got sliced so I left the track.
Other than that, I am very happy.

Hawaii.... :conehead :smash:

With that MPH, and considering you have an auto, do you think you should be able to pick up some time in the 1/4? Not sure how often you get to drag. (I never have - so I really shouldnt be talking.....) but seems that with practice you should be able to get down the track a lot faster.....since I know mackeyred96 has run quicker than that with a 350 bottom end. (I think).

What rear end do you have? Seems to me you have a rocket on your hands. 396! Droooooool.

Steve, who's 2600 convertor do you have????

They are all not the same.

And 15#s may not be enough, i know i used 24# in my 315s. To little air will cause them to cup in the middle.

Nice MPH. Once you get your traction problem solved, you will be hitting some nice ET's.

Congrats on the good first time out with the 396! In your '93 a 115 mph trap speed is representative of a high 11 second potential e.t. in ideal conditions, its all all about getting off the line quickly and cleanly - get some E.T. Streets mounted. Mackey is right about the BFG Drag Radials in the 315/35/17 size - they will definately be cupping in the center at that psi. Their sidewall is too short for low psi, they are a compromise tire in my opinion (allow you to use your existing 17" wheels is their only claim to fame).

I am using the 85/86 torque converter from GM (LIngenfelter sells it and it comes in a AC Delco box). I didnt even think to check the tires for cupping, by doing a little dry hop and seeing the contact patch. Thanks Mackey. I plan ona Vigilante Torque converter when I get back from the Gulf in November as the tranny has 40kmiles on the last rebuild. Also, I will use a ET Drag set up 15/16inch wheel?! to eliminate the traction problem. Hawaii's track isnt a very well prepped track, like an Englishtown for instance.
Right now I need to find the power steering reservoir to pump hose so I can drive. Steve

I dont know how "SERIOUS" you are about drag racing..(every week, or twice a year).. but if you REMOVE your front sway bar, it will loosen the front end, permitting it to LIFT & put more weight on the rear & better traction..

Also both Mackey, myself & several drag racers with C4s who have removed the front sway bar have NOT had any ill handling problems on the street..

I can't even tell the difference with or without it.. but if you lift the front you will see how much looser it is...

However if AutoX or taking the curves at high speed is your thing leave it in..

Look at my 60' times & that with a basically stock motor

I am pretty serious. I do have the FAT sway bars on, and the car is lowered a little, so my weight shift isnt all that great. I was thinking of taking the bar off , but not last night. It was my first night out with the 396, and I just wanted to see what she could do without tweeking.

Thats not too shabby! who's 396 is it? I think I know the convertor you mentioned. I drove a friends Camaro with a Ling 383...and it had that convertor. I liked it! Not too loose, night too tight. Like Red96 said, it might not be the ultimate for neck snapping 60's...but it'll get you there. Nice MPH!

enjoy it.

Hey, Mine was the reservoir black steel line that is behind the Harmonic Balancer. The power steering hoses are fine. The problem I have is I have a 96 Timing Cover, and it has the electronic lug/fitting on the bottom, which 92-95 didnt, and the steel hose doesnt fit right, so I broke off the electronic crank sensor plug (cause I dont need it, 1993 Vette) and plugged up the hole with the brass protion of the sensor, but it still didnt fit right. The 96 Reservoir to pump hose fits fine, so I need to get one. I emailed Jeff Kopp already. I wont be able to fix it till April 26th/27th when I get back from sea. The Balancer just cut right into it and I lost all fluid. Oh well, live and learn. Too Bad, it is a real nice day in Hawaii today, and no car to drive.

Great times Steve on DR's. It is not easy launching a 396. Raced yesterday with my 6M 396 and the 17" setup and the 315 Nitto DR's. launched at idle with no burnout and got a best of 12.18 at 118MPH with a 2.012 60'time. It was 85 degrees and very humid at the track. Going to try the 15" skinnie/BFG DR set up next time and do a little burnout and see what happens.

What cam do you have in your 396? Also, I think the 15" skinnys etc routine is the way to go, to eliminate the traction problem. Steve

I was kind of thinking the same thing...What cam and heads are you using? 115 seems a little low for a 396 (mine traps commonly in the 125-127 range, but it's a different animal). The 396's are hard to launch, particularly with a stick car; they've got a ton of torque!!! Good luck on your efforts... Listen carefully about suspension prep; my car doesn't hook worth a damn and carefully setting the suspension up has a lot to do with how well you'll run. Disconnect your front sway bar, if you've got the selectable shock put them on the softest position, and most importantly-practice launching the car.

Have the TPIS ZZ409. 226/226. 555lift with 1.6RR's. The 15" setup should add about 2MPH and hopefully get the 60' down to the 1.8's. My goal was to run 12.0's at 120MPH with my set up ( no roll bar) and drive home from the track with no rear end parts left at the track. Putting on the ET Streets and setting the HAL's at 0 would definitely get the car down to the mid 11's. In cool weather the MPH would be 122-123. The track life of the car would be about 60 days with this set up. :D

Default Re: 12.63 at 115mph with a 2.135 60'time. In Hawaii with 396 LT-1 Vette (Red Rocket)

I have CNC stage 3 LT-1 heads and a Hot Cam, SHorty headers, 3.75 Gear D44, 52mm T-Body, MSD etc. I am sure I can go quicker, and I do have the thicker sway bars on and ZO7 (non adjustable )shocks. Maybe I need to run softer ones again, as I still hve my old TPIS shocks. I will remove the sway bar, and put my pressure up to 25psi, vice 15 (this was hot, so it was probably lower). When I left Rockinghams track I was running 12.9-13.02 at 106-108 mph, with the 3.75 geared mostly stock LT-1 (see sig), and when I came out here to hawaii, I ran 103mph, 13.4-13.5. So I know it is a quicker car with traction etc. But we all have to race where we live. Think of the poor guys without juice or superchargers in Colorado for example. Anyways, I will be back next weekend to have some fun.
