GM Fast Burn 385 Crate Engine
Hey all. I'd like to know what everyone thinks of this. I wont be doing anything like this until next Spring, but I'm trying to make as many plans in advance as I can - so I can cross things off a list..
I've been thinking about doing a 383 stroker from my L98. But, I found this motor on http://www.gmpartsdirect.com - the part # is: 12496769 if you'd like to take a look. It's got 385 hp at 5200rpm and 385 ft lbs at 4000rpm.
If I opt for the HOT cam and 1.6 self aligning rocker arms, I could be at 425 horsepower. If I read correctly, this engine shipped would cost me $4025.00
Is this a good deal? Or should I just stick to working my own engine? Thanks in advance...

The fast burn heads won't match up with your intake.
To make this work, you could buy a
1 scroggin dickeys vortec TPI base (to get the most out of it, you would need the aftermarket TPI prts)
2 Miniram 3
3 convert a LT4 intake
High Performance isn't a cheap "throw in crate motor solution"

Re: GM Fast Burn 385 Crate Engine (dgoodhue)
Hmm. So maybe working with my own engine would be a better idea - being that it's already hooked up to everything...

I am not saying that crate motors are bad, but your paying $2000 or so for shortblock (piston/rods/crank/engine block...) If your short block works fine, you can modify that and put that $2000 towards other mods. The stock intake and exhuast is going to be one of your weakest points whether you modify the stock motor or buy some high out motor.

dave, how would/could an LT intake be converted? is it as easy as drilling/tapping for fittings where the cylinder head water passages would mate to the intake? how does one fit a thermostat, is there some stand-alone manifold for that?
thanks.
thanks.

also you need a distributor hole.

As for the crossfire -> Fastburn, you really need to upgrade the crossfire intake, it will be severly choked with that on a fast burn.

Well, if you have an 84 or 85 then you have a two piece rear seal block. This means that you can go up to 4 inches of stroke for under $600. bucks.
Add in a nice set of AFR heads and an Edlebrock set up you'll have a 550 lbft torque monster. Another option is the Vortec heads (or Etec 200 heads)with the Scoggin Dickey Tpi manifold.
Good luck

Re: GM Fast Burn 385 Crate Engine (ZD1)
I would suggest doing an aftermarket buildup also - though admittedly I am biased! It's not that the GM crate engine is a bad deal - I would submit that for not much more we an work you up a stronger aftermarket motor that makes more torque/power.
In the end it really depends on what your goals are for the setup!

Would that crate engine work with an 84 digital dash?
