I wanted to put a 6 speed in. After reasearching this and searching for parts I have decided to just rebuild my 700 R4.

If I could have found everything to do the conversion less rear end for around 2 grand for good used parts I would have went for it.

With that being said, my vette has 250k. On the tranny too. I have been waiting for it to die for years, so im going preventive maintenence and going to rebuild it now. It runs perfect. I am by no means a professional wrench, and am looking for any input that will help me build a better tranny.

I have probably did maybe 20 automatics in the last 30 years, and I have forgotten most of the details. Back in the day I took them apart with out tranny tools. Im old now, and want to make the job smoother. I am looking for advice what and where to find the tranny tools I need.
I have been looking at ebay, but havent found anything yet.

Im looking for advice as I go thru the dismantle and rebuild.

Im sure as I tear into this, Im going to have tons of questions. Thank you for your input and replies. Barrett Jackson is going on, so as soon as that is over Im going to start.

Nice Mike! i did my tranmission with the exact same items except i got the 70419 TC
2400 rpm,after 1 year sitting and 1 year of use its still fine and has hold up !
I Swapped the converter not long ago for a PI Vigilante 2800-3000 unit.
The transkit is very good it comes with Raybestos clutches.

I used your thread on polishing to motivate me to do mine while i was putting my new injectors in, Im finished with the polishing and just about ready to start re-assembly,
my gf thinks i have developed an obsessive compulsive disorder and a mate of mine reckons I'm like one of those birds that collects shiny things !

With that many miles you may encounter problems related to wear that go beyond a typical rebuild. It's possible that it may not be cost effective to use that core. Anyway, here's a guy in California that can supply you with whatever you need and advise you better. Give him a call.

Looks like I am going to start taking the vette apart this Saturday. I have been looking at my FSM to get a grip about whats going on before I start. I have did turbo 350's and 400's, but never a 700r4.
If I need any hard parts, I will buy them from J&D Corvette. They are close enough, that I get the parts the next day.

Im hoping by taking this apart before it dies will save me some money vs. rebuilding a catastrophic falure.

Om going to take my time and document everything with tons of pics and do the best possible job I can.

I have always been poor, so I have always did all my own work. I dont like dropping my cars off somewhere, and who knows what kind a crap they will pull on you.

This is where im going to build my sub assemblies. In the kitchen. Nice and clean.

I opened my transkit today to start famializing what going on. I have my FSM and a GM 700r4 tranny book for reference. But the best reference is here at CF.

My new kit has a drain plug. Where in my pan should I put it?
Pull the distributer or just the cap?

After I get the tranny out, do I need to support the rear of the engine?

I made up about 20 bags of all sizes and put labels on them. I cant seem to ever do a project with out losing something. Thanks for all your help everyone.

I am so blessed. My wife Anita allows me to work in the house. And, she lets me park my bike in the kitchen too.

Addict for sure. Me too. Just take the cap off the distributor. Support the motor for sure. I have a feeling I'll be doing the same job this year. Last time I checked the fluid it was real dark red.

Best tool you can get will be a how to video, for reference. I will get one when I do mine. First 700 for me too. I think Pete K would be the guy for real tool advice.

What about an external tranny oil cooler in addition to the one in the radiator?

Good move....glad you didn't go with the 6spd.

Trans cooler is the best mod for it. Especially with the converter.

I would go ahead and add an external cooler too with a higher stall converter; good insurance on any GM trans I think.
