1986 with rear tires sitting differently!
I have seen some posts on this topic, but I can't find them. I have an all original 86 with all original parts. I recently rebuilt the differential and replaced all of the rubber bushings with poly. When I put the car back together, everything was fine and lined up correctly.
A few days ago, I noticed my driver rear tire is sitting out even with the fender, whereas the passenger side is still tucked inside the fender as both used to be. Is this just an alignment issue? The tire is sitting straight up/down (not at an angle), and it is wearing fine. No sign of anything profusely wrong- but something is wrong and I want to figure out why.
Hopefully the bearing assembly isn't about to give out... :(

I exactly remember the post you are talking about. I cant remember how it got resolved. I know some of the possibilities for the problem discussed included
-alignment
-somehow a wheel actually got switched (i.e. differences in backspacing)
-wrong wheel bearing was installed. Seems to me this was the cause.....since there is like only a one digit difference in the P/N and it translates into like a 7mm offset or something
I cant remember the other things mentioned. Hopefully someone can point you to that string, or better yet - the person with the problem before will hop on.
Sorry

I remember a post a while back that stated that a members 86 had different sized rims. You might check that. you may have a mix of 8.5 & 9.5 widths.

Look on the back of the rim for the width. If you have the base suspension, all rims should be 16x8.5. If you have Z51 suspension, the front rims will be 16x8.5 and the rear will be 16x9.5.

I'm betting that was my post.
I haven't figured it out yet, checked all things mentioned, found nothing.
I'm going to replace all the ujoints in the half shafts, after that I have a buddy that works for GM, thats going to align it for me.
I will let you know if that fixes it.

Re: 1986 with rear tires sitting differently! (jimbos86vette)
Thanks! For further information on my problem-
The wheels are all 16x8.5 w/ base suspension, I just verified that after rotating them- it isn't a mixture problem.
The wheel bearings have never been changed??? Possibility... Albeit a scary one.
The u-joints are all brand new (1/2 shafts and driveshaft).
This car was lined up correctly less then a month or two ago. It is an
effect of something that has happened recently...
Anything you find Jimbo would be great. Thanks!!! It isn't really even the
cosmetic thing for me, but I know and have seen what happens when rear
wheel bearings go... It isn't pretty! I am just afraid of a potentially
dangerous mechanical failure.

Jimbo-
Now that I look at your pictures, that is the EXACT way my car looks. The passenger side is tucked and the driver side is even with the fender. I will call around to find something, and if I find anything I will let you know!
For the 92 with the same problem, I think the factory tires/wheels are supposed to be tucked in a bit. 16x8.5, 16x9.5, 17x9.5, etc. should all fit inside me thinks. Maybe the 17x11 ZR1's protrude, justifiably so.

I would not drive it like this, its probably very dangerous in some situations.
I would say that you got a wheel swapped that does not have the correct offset? Thats what it looks like. Or you possibly have the passenger side halfshaft installed incorrectly somehow or the wrong part number?
If all else fails take it to a local shop and get an estimate only.
This problem is more then obvious, its blatent.
Good Luck

Re: 1986 with rear tires sitting differently! (Blu9T2)
I have the exactly the same friggin problem with my 86, only it is worse, as I have 17" tires and 315s in the rear.
I have grey hair because of this.
Well, it least thats what I am blaming it on.
What I figure it is, and I will be having a good look at it next month, is the lower strut rod adjustment - cam bolts.
I figure one is too far in and the other just a touch too far out.
There looks to be quite a bit of adjustment with respect to theese bolts.
Now ther front is a different story...................
Let us know if you get it sorted out.
