Your doing great!
Take advantage of this time to clean the engine bay up why the engine is out. This would also be a great time to remove the evaporator's (AC) housing and clean the coils...that is if you still have or plan to run air conditioning.

SCAT rods came in today. Taking them to the machinist tomorrow. Maybe I will be able to have my block by the end of the week.
I plan on doing some cleaning...i think i'm going to need a bucket and a putty knife to scrape all the crud off.
I wish I could roll it outside and pressure wash the engine bay, but I don't know how I could do it because the transmission is supported by jackstands
Bed picture, just so everyone knows they are mine.

they make a tool that holds the transmission up while the engine is out/holds engine up while the transmission is out.
You could probably make something up out of 2x4 or something like that to hold it up just while you pull it outside.

I ran into that same prob. I sat there and stared for like a half hour trying to figure out how to support it. Eventuslly i decided to just drop it out too. Was pretty simple really. If you have the tranny on a floor jack that has wheels i'm sure you could just safely and slowly roll it out like that. You have an auto right?

Yeah you might as well just drop it then. You've already done more than half the work to get it out. With mine it was just 4 c-beam bolts, 2 u-joint caps, and 2 or 3 connectors, and 4 nuts beneath shifter trim and it was on the floor. Good time to get nice and clean all up in the tunnel and clean the tranny up real good

I started working on dropping it...removed the exhaust hanger that was bolted to the trans, got the front 2 c-beam bolts out. Will get the rest done tomorrow, hopefully.
I may look to replace it with another used one because mine is on its last leg the way it is. It won't live very long behind the new motor for sure.

Dropped new rods off at machinist today. He weighed one of the rods when I was there, the new rod was 18 grams lighter than the old one. So it will definitely have to be rebalanced, I'm going to save close to 160 grams of weight on the rotating assy. Seems like a lot to me, but I don't know a whole lot about that.

Trans:
So ungodly filthy and worn out I don't want to put it back in. I don't even want to clean it.
C-beam:
Front of it is caked with crud, assuming from the small trans leak that was probably leaking for the past 20 years.
Dark side is the side that bolts to the transmission. It's that dirty.
Engine bay. Yes that is transmission fluid all over the floor. Pan caught about 80% of it, not as bad as it looks. Sorry for the bad cell phone picture.
I think I may have bent one of my trans cooler lines and maybe made a little kink in it, I will post pictures tomorrow. Hopefully there is some way to repair it without replacing the entire line, because that would be a major PITA. Even more so than taking them out of the trans. Had to use vice grips on the top cooler line, even my line wrenches were rounding the head off after soaking it in penetrating oil.
I am going to try to find a used 700r4 from a later year car so I can find a high performance torque converter for it more easily. Later year trans had more splines than the old right?
Last summer, when driving the car I noticed that there was a "high speed" (above 80) vibration. It got worse with increasing speed, can some of this be attributed to crud being caked on the driveshaft? From my understanding they are balanced, I think that the crud on there may have been enough to throw the balance off and cause bad vibrations. I plan on replacing U-joints since it is out.
Have not yet heard back from machinist about how the engine assembly is going. Hoping for it to be done sometime this week. Now that trans is out of car, I am going to put the front tires back on and roll it outside, soak the engine bay in engine degreaser, and spray away. I was using a putty knife earlier today to scrape crud off of the frame where the steering rack sits. It's disgusting for sure.
Still breathing,
Jeremy

Moved the car outside today. Sprayed the engine bay with degreaser, and hosed it off. Need more degreaser. LOTS MORE.
Here is a better picture of my engine bay before degreaser. (Natural lighting kicks ***)
I circled where i bent the trans cooler line. I went to carquest and rented a line flaring tool. I am going to cut the line, put a new nut on it, flare it, and then bend a new short line so I don't have to redo the entire line all the way up to the cooler up front.
Here's the C-beam and driveshaft all cleaned up. Going to replace U-joints with Spicer non greasablefrom Denny's Driveshaft when they arrive.
The car is on the ground for the first time in 9-10 months (i don't even remember) and the right rear tire had leaked some air....didn't have an air compressor on site. Didn't feel like carrying it to the gas station....so this is what happened.
More to come, haven't heard from machinist yet.

Jeremy, keep up the good work man! I sent you some $$ for the valve and I'm firing my machinist who gave them a clean bill of health (though I suppose shipping? but in the AFR box... doubtful...anyway). I'm glad it was just minor.
Keep up the good work man!

Damn, Steve and his lawnmower antics are better than Trailer Park Boys. Here's a few more that I have never seen before, and I am still hurting from them.

Awesome videos lol.
BTW, i LOVE trailer park boys. Cory and Trevor were awesome lol.
Thanks for the $$! I really doubt they were damaged during shipping. That thing was packed like rock.
Made some more progress today. I am really out of things to do besides clean until I get the engine back.
Here's how the day started:
Soaked everything in engine degreaser and sprayed it down. I need like 10 more cans and a few more rags
Took top radiator cover off (shroud?) and prepared to remove the radiator
Radiator out. Lots of crap in there.
Radiator. Seemed to be covered in hair. No idea, don't ask.
I also removed this. A/C Thingy. (that is official GM part name) and sprayed that out
Getting closer
Shazam.
Its all back together now. Didn't take a finish pic.
More to come!
Jeremy

Talked to machinist on Thursday. He is taking the rods out and grinding them one at a time.
I was hoping to have it back this week but that didn't happen.
In the meantime, I bought this throttle body from a forum member. 58mm polished professional products. Bed picture to verify it is mine.
I also have a trans on the way. 700R4 out of an 86 vette with 85k miles. Should be better off than the one that was in the car.
