Default SMF/DMF balance questions

Hi all,

I just yanked the clutch and DMF from my '94 LT1 car, and will be installing a spank-new Spec heavyweight steel SMF and Stage 2 clutch. The question of balance arises now. A few things I'd like to know:

1. Is the LTx DMF neutrally balanced?

2. Has anyone had a problem show up with out-of-the-box balance on a Spec heavyweight steel SMF? In other words:

2a. Has anyone had the DMF and Spec heavyweight SMF match-balanced before installing? If so, was there a mis-match that required any adjustments to the SMF?

2b. Has anyone just bolted in a Spec heavyweight SMF and Stage 2 clutch without checking the balance on it prior to the install? If so, did it go smoothly, or did any balance issues show up after the install?

Many thanks in advance.

Live well,

SJW

Oh, and one additional question for those of you who carried the DMF and SMF to a shop to have balance checked:

Did you take the pressure plate, too, or just the flywheels?

TIA.

DMF only came on 1 pce seal engines which are all external balance at rear.
If you look at the engine side of your DMF it has a weight cast on it

One would assume a aftermarket FW for a 1 pce seal engine should have the same factory balance setup as that FW will not bolt to a 2 pce seal crank

Thanks a bunch for the reply. Does this mean that match-balancing flywheels would be highly recommended?

Thanks for the replies, guys. Muchly appreciated. I decided to hedge my bets, and dropped the old DMF and new SMF at the House of Balance on Friday, to have them checked for balance match, and to match-balance as required. Might well prove to have been unnecessary, but yanking the flywheel out of a ZF6 C4 on a Kwiklift is enough of a chore that I'd be very unhappy if I got it all back together and had a vibration issue, so I decided to err on the side of caution in this case. Here's hoping I'll not have to tear into it again anytime soon.

Live well,

SJW
