Default What carb intake will clear stock hood?

I have an 85 that is going to be set up for the track. Has anyone been able to use rpm air gap intake? From what i have been researching it looks like my only two choices are the performer and torker II intake. Please let me know what combos worked for you and post some pics. Thanks, Mike

I ran a torquer II until I installed a cowl hood. It worked well for the limited space under the hood. I believe the performaer may be a little taller. You will also need a drop base air cleaner.

The performer RPM will fit(im not sure how much taller the airgap is), with an Eddy carb (which is taller then the holley slightly) and the drop base eddy aircleaner With about 1" to spare sitting static. Edelbrock lists all the dimensions of the manifolds on their website.

Something I have been toying with is a mid 80's V8 cadillac throttle body Bonnet to redirect the air intake to another location (removing some of the aircleaner from the height problem.) The reason for this is the carb tends to heat soaked and boil the fuel when parked and makes it a pain to start, I would like to get a phenolic isolator under it, but I have to get the 3/4" inch somewhere.

One note, If you have replaced the engine mounts with polyurethanes or solids, that takes away about 3/4" of an inch clearance.

Spectre makes carb hats (like the caddy bondmi is talking about), you can get them in single or dual snorkle style. I had gone through that when I changed my 84 over to the truck style tbi(same 5 1/8 base air cleaner) & used a convential 4bbl. intake w/ a tbi adapter.

4.55" carb pad 1500-6500rpm, should flow better than the idle-5500 for most of the other low profile intakes. The other under the stock hood option is the low version of the vic jr 3500-7500. Personally I think with a cam, headers and a hp750 on a l98 or l83 long block a guy should be able to get close to 400hp with real nice tork using this intake. The other duel plane choices will work with a stock cam (yuc!) but not make much power, the vic jr will need more rpm than the stock long block can handle.
